For more than five decades, dithizone has been widely used as an analytical reagent. This ligand forms strongly colored complexes with metal ions and this ability to form complexes can be used for extraction/removal of certain metal ions in addition to analytical determination. In static mode, the supercritical carbon dioxide extraction of copper and lead ions from aqueous solutions after complexation by the dithizone ligand is studied (at two different conditions: a) p = 120 bar, T = 30 °C, and b) p = 72 bar, T = 50 °C).

The new flotation system for separation of activated carbon powder (ACP) from aqueous solution by using poly γ-glutamic acid (γ-PGA) is proposed in this study. Firstly, γ-PGA was added as flotation agent (both collector agents of ACP and bubble agents). Air was bubbled into the solution, which generates the foam that carries the ACP adsorbed PGA from the solution to the surface.

In the work "Adsorption behavior of Pb(II) in aqueous solution using coffee husk-based activated carbon modified by nitric acid", activated carbon (AC) was prepared from coffee husk and modified by nitric acid for effective lead ions removal from aqueous solution. The as-prepared samples have uniform particles size, developed surface area and contain acidic surface functional groups. Nitric acid modification showed a pronounced effect on improving Pb(II) adsorption capacity.

The molecular structure shows that the complex is a coordination polymer in which there are 2 different lead(II) ions with coordination number of 5, Pb(2), and, with a coordination number of 4, Pb(1). Each atrz acts as a bridging ligand between 2 Pb(II) ions through the 2 adjacent nitrogen atoms of the triazole ring. The acetate anions show different types of coordination mode: one acts as a bridge by coordination of the same oxygen atom with Pb(II) ions and the other as a monodentate coordination by one of the oxygen atoms with Pb(2).

The synthesis and characterization of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid immobilized activated carbon cloth was performed in the present work. It was used for preconcentration-separation of lead(II), cobalt(II), and nickel(II) at trace levels as an adsorbent. Factors including pH, concentration and volume of eluent, sample and eluent flow rates, sample volume, and effect of coexisting ions on the solid phase extraction of analytes were examined. The preconcentration factor was 50.

A magnetic Fe3O4 @ montmorillonite composite was prepared and used for the separation of lead and cadmium from aqueous solutions. For this purpose, magnetite (Fe3O4) was generated by co-precipitation of FeSO4 and FeCl3 onto montmorillonite. The effects of various experimental parameters such as pH of the solution, amount of sorbent, initial concentration of analytes, and contact time on the sorption efficiencies of lead and cadmium ions were investigated and optimized by applying a batch technique.

Cloud point extraction (CPE), which is the most popular coacervate-based extraction method, was utilized for the separation and preconcentration of trace amounts of cadmium, lead, and nickel. Quinalizarin was used as complexing agent and Triton X-114 was used as surfactant. After extraction, analyte ions were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The detection limits (3 s) of 1.8 µg L −1 for Cd(II), 3.2 µg L −1 for Pb(II), and 2.8 µg L −1 for Ni(II) were obtained using 50 mL of solutions.

The bombardment with argon ions of the studied films leads to oxygen vacancy generation in the near-surface layer. The oxygen vacancy concentrations in the bombarded films were evaluated from the comparison of experimental valence band photoelectron spectra with the theoretical ones calculated using the density functional theory.

The M2 protein of the influenza A virus, responsible for flu, is a homotetramer transmembrane protein, forming a transmembrane ion channel, where His 37s act as pH sensors and Trp 41s and Asp 44s act as channel gates. Opening of this channel leads to transfer of virus RNA into the human host. Thus, blocking this transfer is an important pharmaceutical strategy to stop infection. As a result of viral drug resistance, commercially available channel inhibitors, rimantadine (RIM) and amantadine (AMA), are not as effective as they used to be.

Conformers generally deviate structurally from their starting X-ray crystal structures early in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Studies have recognized such structural differences and attempted to provide an explanation for and justify the necessity of MD equilibrations. However, a detailed explanation based on fundamental physics and validation on a large ensemble of protein structures is still missing. Here we provide the first thermodynamic insights into the radically different thermodynamic conditions of crystallization solutions and conventional MD simulations.

Current technologies in next-generation sequencing are offering high throughput reads at low costs, but still suffer from various sequencing errors. Although pyro- and ion semiconductor sequencing both have the advantage of delivering long and high quality reads, problems might occur when sequencing homopolymercontaining regions, since the repeating identical bases are going to incorporate during the same synthesis cycle, which leads to uncertainty in base calling.

The maturation and successful acquisition of developmental competence by an oocyte, the female gamete, during folliculogenesis is highly dependent on molecular interactions with somatic cells. Most of the cellular interactions identified, thus far, are modulated by growth factors, ions or metabolites. We hypothesized that this interaction is also modulated at the transcriptional level, which leads to the formation of gene regulatory networks between the oocyte and cumulus cells.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is known as one of the most popular forms of dementia affecting numerous people worldwide. The Amyloid beta (Aβ) peptides form oligomeric conformations that cause the intracellular Ca2+ and Zn2+ abnormality leading to the death of neuron cells. The failure of AD therapy targeting Aβ oligomers probably caused by misunderstanding the ions transport through transmembrane Aβ (tmAβ) ion-like channel since Aβ oligomers transiently exist in a mixture environment involving various order of Aβ oligomers.

Magnetization and Curie temperature of the samples were measured with the SQUID and VSM equipments. The non-magnetic indium ions were found to reside at the octahedral sites, leading to an increase of the total magnetization and a decrease in the Curie temperature. Molecular field coefficients Naa, Ndd and Nad were determined by fitting the experimental thermomagnetization curves in the framework of a two-sublattice ferrimagnetic model.
