  • During survey from March 2014 to October 2015, in Barasat, West Bengal, India, incidence of symptoms suggestive of virus infection was observed in Coccinia grandis. Infected plants were showing typical symptoms including leaf curling, crinkled leaves, leaf yellowing and stunted growth. Symptomatic plant samples were tested for the presence of potyvirus and geminivirus.

  • The SMV causing mosaic in soybean was readily transmissible through sap, seed and aphids. Sap transmission of the SMV on soybean cv. JS-335 produced characteristic symptoms such as dark green colour of leaves, mosaic and mottling symptoms, crinkling, leaf puckering of leaves. The soybean mosaic virus infected a wide range of the host plants.

  • Mothbean germplasm consisting of 180 accessions were screened against yellow mosaic virus leaf crinkle virus and cercospora leaf spot under the natural field conditions to identify sources of resistance. Based on a consistent observation for 4 different crop seasons germplasm was grouped in accordance with their field reaction. IC-36522 and IC-36217 were found to be the most field promising accession against yellow mosaic virus.

  • The SMV was readily sap transmissible to Soybean cv. JS-335 when the inoculum was prepared in 0.1 M phosphate buffer (pH 7.0) and produce typical symptoms such as mottling, crinkling of leaves, leaf puckering and dwarfing. The cultivar JS-335 was more susceptible to SMV than other cultivars like PK-1029 and MACS-13. The extract prepared from the leaves of soybean proved to be most infectious containing the highest concentrations of the virus as compared to the extracts obtained from other plants parts (Stem and Root).

  • Under field conditions, Soybean mosaic virus infected plants exhibited the major symptoms viz., mosaic and mottling, crinkling, leaf puckering, dwarfing and younger leaves showed clear mosaic symptoms etc. The SMV Infected plants showed considerable reduction in plant height, pod length, grains per pod and pods per plant that leads to considerable reduction in the economic yield. The SMV was readily sap transmissible to cv. JS-335 when the inoculum was prepared in 0.1 M phosphate buffer (pH 7.0) and produce typical symptoms such as mottling, crinkling of leaves, leaf puckering and dwarfing.

  • Blackgram (Vigna mungo) is a major pulse crop grown in Tamil Nadu and leaf crinkle virus is an important disease that infects the crops at various stages of its growth, which reduce the yield drastically. There are conflicting reports on the transmission of ULCV by insects that includes aphids, leafhopper, whitefly and beetle. Hence, a study was carried out to identify the putative vectors involved in the transmission of the disease. Found that the virus was effectively transmitted by aphid vector, Aphis craccivora in a non-persistent manner and whitefly (Bemisia tabaci).
