The main findings of the study were that: (1) Goats fed Bauhinia acuminata responded with improved diet digestibility, N retention and growth rate when the Bauhinia acuminata was supplemented with water spinach; (2) However an important negative effect was that the improvement in diet digestibility by supplementation with water spinach led to increases in methane production per unit diet DM digested; (3) Supplementing Bauhinia acuminata foliage with leaves from a bitter variety of cassava reduced the in vitro production of methane when compared with supplementation by leaves from a sweet va...

The metabolic activities of the casein peptides were verified using purified enzymatic inhibition studies. The regulatory enzyme inhibition led us to conclude a positive correlation with the role of casein peptides in modulating the diabetic and hypertensive metabolic pathways in the biological system. Purified enzymes were used for the investigation to clearly observe the direct impact on the diabetes and hypertension related bioprocesses.

In this article, we investigated effect of carrier resin ratio and anti-oxidation additives content on properties of anti-oxidant additives Masterbatchs (MBs). The characteristics were measured by: melt flow index (MFI), morphology (SEM), tensile strength and elongation at break. The results indicated that: increasing LLDPE content in carrier resin led to decreasing mechanical properties, MFI weren’t uniform in MBs. With 80/20 of LDPE/LLDPE ratio, the tensile strength and elongation at break values were highest (21.0 MPa, 680.5 %).

The aim of this research is to discover how senior managers view the impacts of the recession on training and development in Ireland and to identify problems they have had to face and how they have managed through the recession and beyond. The research has found that training is regarded as hugely important despite of or in fact of the recession and managers are willing to do what they can to ensure they can keep this function operating. This has led to some innovative and extremely effective training methods.

Calcitonin (Ct) is a 32-residue peptide hormone that is mainly known for its hypocalcemic effect and the inhibition of bone resorption. Our previous studies have led to potent, side-chain lactam-bridged human Ct (hCt) analogues [Kapurniotu, A. Kayed, R., Taylor, J.W. & Voelter W. (1999) Eur. J. Biochem.265, 606±618; Kapurniotu, A. & Taylor, J.W. (1995)J. Med. Chem.38, 836±847]. We have hypothesized that a possibly type Ibturn/bsheet confor-mation in the region 17±21 may play an important role in hCt bioactivity. ...

We investigated the effect of nitric oxide (NO) donors on the activities of annexin II tetramer (AIIt), a member of the Ca 2+ -dependent phospholipid-binding protein family. Incubation of purified AIIt with S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO) led to the inhibition of AIIt-mediated liposome aggregation. This effect was dose-dependent with an IC50 of approximately 100lM. Sodium nitroprusside, another NO donor also inhibited AIIt-mediated liposome aggregation, whereas reduced glutathione, nitrate, or nitrite had no effects. ...

Glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK3) is inactivated by insulin and lithium and, like insulin, Li also activates glycogen synthase (GS)viainhibition of GSK3. Li also mimics insu-lin’s ability to stimulate glucose transport (GT), an obser-vation that has led to the suggestion that GSK3 may coordinate hormonal increases in GT and glycogen synthe-sis. Here we have used Li and SB-415286, a selective GSK3 inhibitor, to establish the importance of GSK3 in the hor-monal activation of GT in terms of its effect on GS in L6 myotubes and3T3-L1adipocytes. ...

Acetylcholine hydrolysis by acetylcholinesterase is inhi-bited at high substrate concentrations. To determine the residues involved in this phenomenon, we have mutated most of the residues lining the active-site gorge but mutating these did not completely eliminate hydrolysis. Thus, we analyzed the effect of a nonhydrolysable sub-strate analogue on substrate hydrolysis and on reactiva-tion of an analogue of the acetylenzyme.

The discovery of novel biologically active peptides has led to an explosion in our understanding of the molecular mechanisms that underlie the regula-tion of sleep and wakefulness. Urotensin II (UII), a peptide originally isolated from fish and known for its strong cardiovascular effects in mammals, is another surprising candidate in the regulatory network of sleep.

Benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) is a common food pollutant that causes DNA adduct formation and is carcinogenic. The report of a positive correlation between human plasma B[a]P levels and body mass index, together with B[a]P’s lipophilicity, led us to test for possible adverse effects of B[a]P on adipose tissue.

A common feature of all the proposed mechanisms for monoamine oxidase is the initiation of catalysis with the deprotonated form of the amine sub-strate in the enzyme–substrate complex. However, recent steady-state kinetic studies on the pH dependence of monoamine oxidase led to the sug-gestion that it is the protonated form of the amine substrate that binds to the enzyme.

Interest in using artificial neural networks (ANNs) for forecasting has led to a tremendous surge in research activities in the past decade. While ANNs provide a great deal of promise, they also embody much uncertainty. Researchers to date are still not certain about the effect of key factors on forecasting performance of ANNs. This paper presents a state-of-the-art survey of ANN applications in forecasting.

Antibodies In general, antibodies are not very effective at killing cancer cells. Because the tumor seems to influence the host toward making antibodies rather than generating cellular immunity, it is inferred that antibodies are easier for the tumor to fend off. Many patients can be shown to have serum antibodies directed at their tumors, but these do not appear to influence disease progression. However, the ability to grow very large quantities of high-affinity antibody directed at a tumor by the hybridoma technique has led to the application of antibodies to the treatment of cancer.

SAR Distributions in a Head Model The development of cellular telephones and mobile communication systems has led to a growing awareness of the vital role that wireless systems play in communication networks and the biological effects of EM fields on users. Since cellular hand phones are operated in close proximity to human heads while in use, there has been increasing public concern about the health effects of the human head exposed to EM energy emitted from mobile handset antennas.
