Leishmania infantum
-
Captive and free-ranging wild mammals have been recognized as potential reservoirs of Leishmania infantum infection. The aim of this study was to describe the first clinical case of leishmaniosis in the Eurasian otter.

Leishmania parasites express various essential proteins in different growth phases (logarithmic/ stationary) and forms (promastigote/amastigote). Targeting the genes encoding such proteins paves the way for controlling these parasites. Centrin is an essential gene, which its protein product seems to be vital for the proliferation of Leishmania parasites.

A large number of animal species are susceptible to Leishmania infantum (Kinetoplastida, Trypanosomatidae) in endemic areas, including domestic and wild felids such as tigers (Panthera tigris). Knowledge on the infection of this endangered species is still at its infancy, and therefore this study aims to identify clinical presentation and clinicopathological findings of tigers naturally infected by L. infantum.

Sand flies are the vectors of Leishmania parasites. To develop in the sand fly midgut, Leishmania multiplies and undergoes various stage differentiations giving rise to the infective form, the metacyclic promastigotes.

The glyoxalase pathway ofLeishmania infantumwas kinetically character-ized as a trypanothione-dependent system. Using time course analysis based on parameter fitting with a genetic algorithm, kinetic parameters were estimated for both enzymes, with trypanothione derived substrates. A Kmof 0.253 mmand aVof 0.21lmolÆmin )1 Æmg )1 for glyoxalase I, and a Kmof 0.098 mmand aVof 0.18lmolÆmin )1 Æmg )1 for glyoxalase II, were obtained.

LeIF, aLeishmaniaprotein similar to the eukaryotic initiation factor eIF4A, which is a prototype of the DEAD box protein family, was origin-ally described as a Th1-type natural adjuvant and as an antigen that indu-ces an IL12-mediated Th1 response in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells of leishmaniasis patients.
