Sex steroids were involved during the process of sex differentiation, gametogenesis and sex reversal in fish and the expression of steroidogenic enzyme genes and their related transcription factors are critical for the development of the gonads and the regulation of steroidogenesis. The early stage of steroidogenesis is important for biosynthesis of testosterone and estradiol. In this study, three steroidogenic enzyme genes cyp19a1, 11βhsd (11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase) and 3βhsd (3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase) expression in various stages of gonad development has been analysed.

A 90 days growth trial was conducted to evaluate optimum protein requirement for Indian spiny loach (Lepidocephalus thermalis). Five different protein feeds viz., 20%, 25%, 30%, 35%, and 40% were prepared as experimental diets. This feeding trial was conducted in 40 L plastic troughs in triplicates using loaches with an average weight of 1.28 g - 1.55 g. During the experimental period, water quality parameters were measured and recorded daily. The mean value of water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, ammoniaN, nitrite-N, nitrate-N, hardness, alkalinity in the experimental system were 23.

Lepidocephalus thermalis forms a potential candidate species for aquaculture, being a native species it also has high market demand with easy domestication procedure. RNA was extracted from the ovarian tissues of Lepidocephalus thermalis by following the TRIZOL reagent method and cDNA was synthesized. The purity of RNA, cDNA and PCR products were checked.
