This article aimsto discover discourse features of resumés in English from the perspective of Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA). It focuses on describing layout features, lexical choices, grammar features and the image-language relations in 50 English resumés based on the qualitative method.

The principal objective of this investigation "An investigation into the lexical density and readability of Non-English majored first-year students’ writing at Hanoi National University of Education" is to evaluate the lexical density and readability in the writings of first-year Mathematics-majored students with dual major in English at Hanoi National University of Education. The study shows that students can only achieve the average level of both lexical density and readability, which suggests that they need to enhance their writing skills with more complex grammar and vocabulary.

The research reveals a quantifiable evaluation of the lexical resources, tapping into the mutual and exclusive words, as well as examining lexical complexity of the two sets of textbooks. Unlike conventional textbook reviews focusing on grammar, this study is one of the first attempts to evaluate textbooks efficiency from corpus linguistics perspective, which in turn contributes to the improvement of the current English textbooks in Viet Nam, as well as a source of consideration for curriculum design worldwide.

This paper defines a language Z~ for specifying LFG grammars. This enables constraints on LFG's composite ontology (c-structures synchronised with fstructures) to be stated directly; no appeal to the LFG construction algorithm is needed. We use f to specify schemata annotated rules and the LFG uniqueness, completeness and coherence principles. Broader issues raised by this work are noted and discussed.

We argue that the resource sharing that is commonly manifest in semantic accounts of coordination is instead appropriately handled in terms of structure-sharing in LFG f-structures. We provide an extension to the previous account of LFG semantics (Dalrymple et al., 1993a) according to which dependencies between f-structures are viewed as resources; as a result a one-to-one correspondence between uses of f-structures and meanings is maintained.

The formal architecture of Lexical Functional Grammar offers a particular formal device, the structural correspondence, for modularizing the mapping between the surface forms of a language and representations of their underlying meanings. This approach works well when the structural discrepancies between form and meaning representations are finitely bounded, but there are some phenomena in natural language, e.g. adverbs in English, where this restriction does not hold.

We report grammar inference experiments on partially parsed sentences taken from the Wall Street Journal corpus using the inside-outside algorithm for stochastic context-free grammars. The initial grammar for the inference process makes no ,assumption of the kinds of structures and their distributions. The inferred grammar is evaluated by its predicting power and by comparing the bracketing of held out sentences imposed by the inferred grammar with the partial bracketings of these sentences given in the corpus.

In this paper a bidirectional parser for Lexicalized Tree Adjoining Grammars will be presented. The algorithm takes advantage of a peculiar characteristic of Lexicalized TAGs, i.e. that each elementary tree is associated with a lexical item, called its anchor. The algorithm employs a mixed strategy: it works bottom-up from the lexical anchors and then expands (partial) analyses making top-down predictions.

We think the parts are of interest in their o~. The paper consists of three sections: (I) We give a detailed description of the PROLOG implementation of the parser which is based on the theory of lexical functional grammar (I/V.). The parser covers the fragment described in [1,94]. I.e., it is able to analyse constructions involving functional control and long distance dependencies.
