Lichen forming fungi

Lichens, formed by the symbiosis of fungi and algae or cyanobacteria, are increasingly recognized for their potential medicinal properties, including their potential to treat type 2 diabetes. Many studies have shown that the bioactive metabolites of lichens originate from their fungal partners. This study isolated the mycobiont from a Graphis lichen sample and investigated the antioxidant and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of its ethyl acetate extract.

The new lichen species Toniniopsis bartakii is described from James Ross Island, the North-East Antarctic Peninsula region. It is phylogenetically most closely related to T. bagliettoana but differs mainly in forming a more developed, squamulose thallus. It is morphologically more similar to T. coelestina but differs mainly in the pigmentation in the proper exciple. An identification key to the known species of Toniniopsis is also provided.

Early attempts to look at the link between air pollution and wildlife focused mainly on the so- called "charismatic megafauna", ie on large and "colourful" species of animals. In fact, the most widely affected species - in terms of both number of species suffering damage from air pollution and also sensitivity of individual species to pollution - are amongst the lower life forms. In particular, lichens, bryophytes, fungi, and soft-bodied aquatic invertebrates are likely to be at risk.

Lichen is a special form of life is formed by the symbiosis between algae and some fungi. The mycelium absorbs water and minerals provide the algae. Algae due to chlorophyll, use them to make organic matter to feed on both sides. In this common life of algae and fungi have a certain role, neither party relying solely on the real nao.Hinh is called symbiosis.
