Lichen symbiosis
-
Lichens, formed by the symbiosis of fungi and algae or cyanobacteria, are increasingly recognized for their potential medicinal properties, including their potential to treat type 2 diabetes. Many studies have shown that the bioactive metabolites of lichens originate from their fungal partners. This study isolated the mycobiont from a Graphis lichen sample and investigated the antioxidant and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of its ethyl acetate extract.

Many studies have performed to investigate these symbiotic relationships in depth, however, still have some debates on them, though many taxonomists rely on genetic analyses besides with traditional morphological data. In our study, it highlights the nature, importance, nutritional and pharmaceutical uses, and applications of these mysterious dual between fungi and plant and/or algae.

Lichens, encompassing 20,000 known species, are symbioses between specialized fungi (mycobionts), mostly ascomycetes, and unicellular green algae or cyanobacteria (photobionts). Here we describe the first parallel genomic analysis of the mycobiont Cladonia grayi and of its green algal photobiont Asterochloris glomerata.

Symbiosis is central to ecosystems and has been an important driving force of the diversity of life. Close and long-term interactions are known to develop cooperative molecular mechanisms between the symbiotic partners and have often given them new functions as symbiotic entities.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the antioxidant, α-glucosidase inhibitory and antifungal activities of methanol extracts of lichens from eleven lichen species isolated in Viet Nam including Usnea, Lobaria, and Parmotrema were evaluated. The antioxidant activity was determined by ABTS radical scavenging activities.

Lichen is a special form of life is formed by the symbiosis between algae and some fungi. The mycelium absorbs water and minerals provide the algae. Algae due to chlorophyll, use them to make organic matter to feed on both sides. In this common life of algae and fungi have a certain role, neither party relying solely on the real nao.Hinh is called symbiosis.
