Lichenized fungi

Lichens, formed by the symbiosis of fungi and algae or cyanobacteria, are increasingly recognized for their potential medicinal properties, including their potential to treat type 2 diabetes. Many studies have shown that the bioactive metabolites of lichens originate from their fungal partners. This study isolated the mycobiont from a Graphis lichen sample and investigated the antioxidant and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of its ethyl acetate extract.

In our study, we evaluate antimicrobial, antiquorum sensing (QS) and antioxidant activity of Usnea longissima secondary metabolites extracted in acetone, methanol, and 70% hydroalcoholic solvents. Antimicrobial activity of extracts was evaluated against fungus (Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans) and six bacterial (Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aerogenosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans) strains.

Many studies have performed to investigate these symbiotic relationships in depth, however, still have some debates on them, though many taxonomists rely on genetic analyses besides with traditional morphological data. In our study, it highlights the nature, importance, nutritional and pharmaceutical uses, and applications of these mysterious dual between fungi and plant and/or algae.

The new lichen species Toniniopsis bartakii is described from James Ross Island, the North-East Antarctic Peninsula region. It is phylogenetically most closely related to T. bagliettoana but differs mainly in forming a more developed, squamulose thallus. It is morphologically more similar to T. coelestina but differs mainly in the pigmentation in the proper exciple. An identification key to the known species of Toniniopsis is also provided.

Calopadia ruiliensis, found on living leaves in southwest China, is described as a new species, based on morphology and phylogenetic analysis. It is characterized by a foliicolous thallus with yellow greenish to creamy yellow color, rounded apothecia with nonpruinose to thinly pruinose disc, a dark olive-green hypothecium and black-brown subhymenium, and 1-spored asci producing muriform ascospores. Phylogenetic analysis of LSU sequence data shows that the new species clusters in the genus Calopadia with high bootstrap support.

Lichens, encompassing 20,000 known species, are symbioses between specialized fungi (mycobionts), mostly ascomycetes, and unicellular green algae or cyanobacteria (photobionts). Here we describe the first parallel genomic analysis of the mycobiont Cladonia grayi and of its green algal photobiont Asterochloris glomerata.

Total 108 Indian clavarioid fungi belonging to 17 genera were compiled from literature. These fungi are distributed in 13 states of India. Genus Ramaria represent the largest number of species (39) followed by Clavaria (13), Clavulinopsis (12), Clavulina (11) and Typhula (10). Genera like Aphelaria, Artomyces, Deflexula, Gloeocantharellus, Multiclavula and Scytinopogon are least diverse and represented by only one species.

Fungal infections which include Dermatophytosis are one among the most common communicable disease in the world. Dermatophytes are a group of fungi which cause infection on skin, hair and nails and these fungi do not infect mucosal surfaces. The study was aimed at evaluating the antifungal activity of diethyl ether, methanol and acetone extract of selected lichens Usnea perplexans Stirton, Usnea spinocula Stirton, Usnea subsordiata Stirton, Ramalina conduplicans Vainio, Roccella montagnei Bel emend, Aswath against dermatophytes, Aspergillus flavus and Candida albicans.
