Corynebacterium diphtheriae is the main etiological agent of diphtheria, a global disease causing lifethreatening infections, particularly in infants and children. Vaccination with diphtheria toxoid protects against infection with potent toxin producing strains.

Staphylococci are Gram positive bacteria capable of causing both localize and lifethreatening systemic infections in animals and humans. The present study was aimed at the isolation and identification of various Staphylococci species from cattle in Maiduguri Borno State. One hundred (100) nasal swabs were randomly collected from cattle in January 2011, and then processed in accordance with standard methods for bacteria isolation.

Infection of the submandibular and/or sublingual space typically originates from an infected or recently extracted lower tooth. The result is the severe, lifethreatening infection referred to as Ludwig's angina (see "Oral Infections," above). Infection of the lateral pharyngeal (or parapharyngeal) space is most often a complication of common infections of the oral cavity and upper respiratory tract, including tonsillitis, peritonsillar abscess, pharyngitis, mastoiditis, or periodontal infection.

Viruses present a more difficult problem of chemotherapy than do higher organisms, e.g. bacteria, for they are intracellular parasites that use the metabolism of host cells. Highly selective toxicity is, therefore, harder to achieve. Identification of differences between viral and human metabolism has led to the development of effective antiviral agents, whose roles are increasingly well defined.
