Life Without Limits

Pain is a common, debilitating, and feared symptom, including among cancer survivors. However, large-scale population-based evidence on pain and its impact in cancer survivors is limited. We quantified the prevalence of pain in community-dwelling people with and without cancer, and its relation to physical functioning, psychological distress, and quality of life (QoL).

Independence in performing activities of daily living (ADLs) is a central aspect of functioning. Older adults frequently experience impairments and limitations in functioning in various life areas. The aim of this survey was to explore the limitations in the ADLs in older adults in a population-based survey in Austria.

Low back pain (LBP) affects more than one third of the population at any given time, and chronic LBP is responsible for increased medical costs, functional limitations and decreased quality of life. A clear etiology is often difficult to identify, but aberrant posture and movement are considered contributing factors to chronic LBP that are addressed during physiotherapy intervention.

Minimal processing potatoes have some undesirable physiological consequences like enzymatic browning on cut surfaces. Storability is limited due to enzyme catalyzed browning reaction. The enzymatic action varies depending upon the cube size, different gauges of polythene and vacuum packaging. The aim this work was to study the effect of cube size, polythene gauge and vacuum on Physical characteristics of minimally processed potato.

The term ―luxury‖ is routinely used in our everyday life to refer to products, services or a certain lifestyle, however, often without a clear understanding of the luxury concept as it takes on many different forms for different people and is dependent on the mood and experience of the consumer: ―Luxury is particularly slippery to define. A strong element of human involvement, very limited supply and the recognition of value by others are key components‖ (Cornell 2002, p. 47). The word luxury ―defines beauty; it is art applied to functional items.

The gross production / consumption loss: The costs of additional mortality cases are assessed according to the loss in income / production or the loss of consumption. This valuation concept - sometimes refered as discounted future earnings - is based on the loss resulting from a premature death for the economy as a whole. It is a concept based on the general society, without regarding the individual difference in valuing lower or higher risks of mortality or fatal accidents.

The Bank assumes that the four types of capital it identifies are substitutable, in other words that the economy is a self-sufficient system, rather than a subsystem of a finite ecosystem, dependent upon the latter for inputs, sinks and life-support functions. The “weak sustainability” approach which forms the basis of genuine savings calculations assumes that there are no ecological limits, only moments when the economy may stumble a little before adapting (for example by inventing new technologies or finding new raw materials) without critical damage occuring.

This optimistic view of Fries was replacing a pessimistic view, termed the failure of success, expressed earlier by Gruenberg (38). This view, also based on limited evidence, felt that the extension of life for persons with chronic conditions, without a reduction in the incidence of these conditions, would lead to deterioration in population health. Manton (48) proposed a position somewhere between the two outlined above.

Although we are primarily interested in the housing consumption of the elderly, we did not limit our analysis to the householders aged 62 and older. For comparison purposes, we looked at all householders. We did this by segregating the householder population into seven age cohorts. The number of age cohorts is large enough to let us capture changes in housing consumption over individuals’ lifecycle, without being overly burdensome on the analysis. The cohort widths have been defined such that they can mirror reasonable life bands.

Realistic versions of the buffer stock model with finite horizons and declining in- come after retirement limit considerably the age-range of buffer stock behavior. Car- roll (1997) shows that buffer stock behavior emerges until roughly age 50, and that afterwards people start to accumulate wealth steadily to prepare for retirement. Other models of intertemporal choice deliver different predictions about the correlation be- tween income and consumption and the age-wealth profile during the life-cycle.

A ‘textbook’ plant typically comprises about 85% water and 13.5% carbohy- drates. The remaining fraction contains at least 14 mineral elements, without which plants would be unable to complete their life cycles. These essential mineral elements include six macronutrients – N, K, P, S, Mg and Ca – which are present in relatively large amounts in plant tissues (mg g−1 of dry tissue), and several micronutrients, including Fe and Zn, which are present in smaller amounts (µg g−1 of dry tissue).

The storage of tissue-engineered products is an attractive target for technological development. Since tissue-engineered products usually consist of living cells, technical issues include the limited shelf life of the cells and the use of specialized conditions for transportation. Without storage, treatment with cells requires timely harvesting from the donor, which significantly affects the availability of tissue-engineered products.

Chance events are commonplace in our daily lives. Every day we face situations where the result is uncertain, and, perhaps without realizing it, we guess about the likelihood of one outcome or another. Fortunately, mastering the concepts of probability can cast new light on situations where randomness and chance appear to rule. In this fully revised second edition of Understanding Probability, the reader can learn about the world of probability in an appealing way.
