Colletotrichum musae inciting margin leaf blight of banana was isolated using the infected samples showing typical symptoms. The changes in growth and sporulation of the obtained culture when exposed to different abiotic factors such as media, hydrogen ion concentration and light were recorded to check their influence on fungal development.

An experiment was conducted to study influence of physiological parameters like temperature, pH and light period on growth and sporuation of Macrophomina phaseolina, the incident of stem and root rot of sesame. It is found that, the pathogen grew best at neutral pH i.e. pH 6.5 (285.8 mg) followed by pH 7 (278.0 mg). The temperature of 350 C is best for mycelial growth of M. phaseolina followed by 300 C while no growth was found at lower temperatures. The growth of fungus reduces as the temperature increases or decreases.

Cabbage is a cool season crop grown in temperate regions and belongs to family Brassicaceae. In Kerala, cabbage is grown in an area of 197 ha and major cultivated regions were Idukki and Wayanad districts. The leaf spot of cabbage is caused by Alternaria brassicicola is a widespread disease affecting the yield of cabbage. This disease can be managed by using fungicides or bioagents but the efficacy of these measures depend on host pathogen interaction, which is influenced by environmental factors.

The pathogen Bipolaris oryzae was subjected to different cultural conditions viz., media, temperature, pH, light and nutrient source under in vitro conditions. The maximum radial growth of 84.83 mm was recorded on paddy leaf extract agar followed by potato dextrose agar (61.33 mm). On this medium, the colony appeared greyish-white to dark brown, thick, leathery slightly raised and profuse mycelia with brown colored conidia.

Effect of different temperature, pH levels, and light intensity were tested against the growth of Alternaria solani under in vitro conditions. Mycelium growth and sporulation of Alternaria solani was significantly influenced with temperature. Maximum colony growth was recorded at 25oC followed by 30oC and minimum colony growth was recorded at 40oC. Excellent sporulation was noticed at 20oC and 25oC temperature.

Sclerotium rolfsii is one of the most important soil-borne plant pathogen which cause severe loss at the time of seedling development. It also causes collar rot in several crops and wild plants. In this experiment, exposure of pathogen to different light period and pH in order to assess the mycelial growth and number of sclerotia of S. rolfsii was done. For the light experiment three plate continues dark, light and 12 hour interval.

Studies were conducted in the Dept. of Plant Pathology of Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology, Bhubaneswar for the various physiological requirements of Sarocladium oryzae causing sheath rot of rice. It was revealed that Potato dextrose agar supported significantly maximum radial growth (74.0mm) followed by Sabouraud’s medium (71.8mm) and Czapek’s dox medium (70.0mm). Significantly dry weight of mycelial mat was maximum at pH 4.0 (769.0mg) followed by pH 3.5 (746.6 mg). The highest radial growth was observed in 12 hour light and 12 hour darkness (68.

In the present work we have extended these experiments by the use of the plate count in an effort to throw more light on the mechbanism of the salt action. Since our previous experiments have shown that the salt effect is magnified on the acid side of the region of optimum growth (Sherman and Holm, 1922), we have used in the present work media adjusted to a reaction of pH 5.4. All of the counts here reported represent the average of triplicate plates on extract-pepton agar incubated for three days at 33°C. Further details of the experiments are given in the appendix.
