Biodegradable composite films, based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and lignin extracted from sugar bagasse, were fabricated with various weight ratios between two components. The composites show adequate characteristics contributed by PVA and lignin which have specific functional groups revealed by Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). In addition, the composites possess outstanding characteristics including comparable optical and mechanical properties investigated by mechanical testing method and Ultraviolet–visible (UV) spectroscopy.

Waxes are esters of long-chain fatty acids with long-chain fatty alcohols found abundant in the environment in various forms. Bacteria degrading these waxes in agricultural residues, soils and insects are gaining increased attention. In India, about 500 million tonnes of crop residues are generated annually and these crop residues are rich in cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, pectin, cutin, waxes, fats and oils. Accumulation of waxy rich crop residues in the environment decreases the rate of decomposition and increase the hydrophobicity of soils.

Tobacco stalk is one kind of abundant crop residues in China. The high lignification of tobacco stalk increases its reusing cost and the existing of nicotine will cause serious pollution. The biodegradation of lignocellulosic biomass has been demonstrated to be an environmental and economical approach for the utilization of plant stalk.

The present study was focused on the biodegradation of pine needles by the production of hydrolytic enzymes viz. cellulase, xylanase, laccase as well as reducing sugars production w.r.t optimization of moisture (Basal salt media) ratio for the newly isolated white rot fungi Phanerochaete sp. S7, Armillaria sp. K3 and Phanerochaete chrysosporium [NCIM 1197] were optimized under solid state fermentation and maximum of cellulase (52.27 U/g) with specific activity of 2.10 was observed in P.

Aryl-alcohol oxidase provides H2O2 for lignin biodegradation, a key pro-cess for carbon recycling in land ecosystems that is also of great biotechno-logical interest. However, little is known of the structural determinants of the catalytic activity of this fungal flavoenzyme, which oxidizes a variety of polyunsaturated alcohols.
