Lignin concentrations

Aqueous sodium hydroxide solutions are extensively used as solvents for lignin in kraft pulping. These are also appealing systems for cellulose dissolution due to their inexpensiveness, ease to recycle and low toxicity. Cellulose dissolution occurs in a narrow concentration region and at low temperatures.

The present investigation was carried out in Renewable Energy Laboratory of the Department of Renewable and Bio Energy Engineering, College of Agriculture Engineering & Technology, CCS Haryana Agriculture University, Hisar. Biogas production was recorded for 70 days (ten weeks) in batch type digestion. Anaerobic digestion of fresh cattle dung (CD) and paddy straw (PS) in different ratio was carried out under batch system. Paddy straw was mixed with cattle dung in different percentage 5%, 7%, 15%, 22.5% and one control. Methane content in all the reactors varied between 60-62%.

The present investigation deals with process optimisation of delignification of rice straw towards its micro-porous structural enhancement for its utilization in polymer grafting. The individual effect of influential parameters viz. sodium hydroxide concentration (1–12%, w/v), reaction time (30–126 min), and temperature (20–150 C) on delignification were studied in a single mode batch process. The process parameters were further optimized with Central composite design (CCD) approach of response surface methodology in Design expert software.

Acetic acid or formic acid treatment of rice straw with the variation of reaction variables, namely acid concentration, catalyst (HCl or H2SO4) concentration, reaction time, temperature and liquor ratio, was investigated to ascertain effects on the dissolution of hemicellulose, which facilitates the dissolution of lignin during alkaline extraction or peroxyacid treatment and improved the drainability of straw pulp.

Globe artichoke (Cynara cardunculus L. var. scolymus Fiori) is an economically important crop in the Mediterranean basin and particularly in Italy, which is a leading producer. In this research, we studied the effect of extended photoperiod (15 and 17 h) on polyphenolic, flavonoids, lignin concentrations, and antioxidant activity in edible and inedible organs of artichoke.
