Lignocellulosic biomass is a potential material source for ethanol production. Particularly, the sugarcane bagasse (SCB) coming from the sugar waste of the refinery is very rich in lignocellulose that can be biochemically transformed into ethanol. However, its recalcitrant structure necessitates a pretreatment step to break up the lignocellulosic matrix, thus improving the accessibility of hydrolytic enzymes to carbohydrates for sugar production.

Feruloyl esterase catalyze the hydrolysis of a wide variety of glycosidic linkages between two or more carbohydrates or between a carbohydrate and a non-carbohydrate moiety. Thereby, they play a role in the initial degradation of lignocelluloses, which may be advantageous for the efficient degradation of the plant cell-wall complex that contains both diverse sugar residues and esterified structures.

The characteristics of elephant grass, especially its stem lignocellulose, are of great significance for its quality as feed or other industrial raw materials. However, the research on lignocellulose biosynthesis pathway and key genes is limited because the genome of elephant grass has not been deciphered.

Cellulosimicrobium sp. MP1 was isolated from termites gut, showing ability to biosynthesize cellulase including endoglucanase, exoglucanase, -glucosidase and xylanase and therefore is potential candidate for enzymatic saccharification of lignocellulosic material. The aim of this study is to investigate the ability of crude enzyme produced from Cellulosimicrobium sp. MP1 to hydrolyse the abundant lignocellulosic material in Viet Nam as straw.

Currently, the ability to convert raw materials from lignocellulose-rich biomass by traditional methods has many limitations. Therefore, the objective of the thesis is to exploit a variety of biocatalysts (hydrolases) from fungi to efficiently convert lignocellulose-rich biomass from ABP into sugars (C5 and C6) capable of fermenting for bioethanol production. The thesis uses "enzyme cocktail" synergistic catalyst to increase the ability of biological transformation.

Biomass from food crops not a good option due to demand of food. Lignocellulosic feed stocks are residues of food crop and forestry waste. This makes researchers to focus on the conversion of feed stock to useful green fuels and other flat form chemicals. This present paper briefly reviews the conversion of lignocellulosic material conversion to furfural and furfuryl alcohol by hydrolysis process.

The use of natural cellulosic fibers as materials in the reinforcements of polymer composites and sorption of oil from water, has directed more focus on acetylation than other known chemical modification methods. Cellulose can be modified by acetylation to provide a suitable and cost effective cellulose acetate which have high hydrophobic characteristics and are biodegradable.

Lignocellulosic biomass bioethanol production, commonly referred to as Second Generation biofuels, using agricultural residues, forest residues, energy feedstocks, municipalities, and other waste crop solids is considered as a promising alternative energy source in order to minimize reliance on limited fossil sources, greenhouse gas emissions, and environmental pollutions. Bioethanol from food based materials may lead to „„food vs fuel” conflict with the increase of world population.

Vanillin, a type of phenolic released during the pre-treatment of lignocellulosic materials, is toxic to microorganisms and therefore its presence inhibits the fermentation. The vanillin can be reduced to vanillyl alcohol, which is much less toxic, by the ethanol producer Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
