An investigation was taken up to study the magnitude of heterosis for nine characters in rice viz., days to 50 percent flowering, days to maturity, plant height at maturity, productive tillers per plant, tillers per square meter, thousand grain weight, grains per panicle, and yield per plant. The base material for this experiment consisted of 36 F1s involving three cytoplasmic male sterile lines (CMS) and twelve diverse restorers in line x tester mating design along with best varietal check Phule Samruddhi and best hybrid check Sahyadri-4.

The present investigation was carried out to study heterosis, combining ability and gene interactions over environments of parents and their crosses in kharif 2018. The experimental material, consisting of eleven lines, five testers and their resultant 55 hybrids along with a commercial hybrid check „OH-102‟ of okra were sown in three different locations of south Gujarat viz., College farm, NMCA, NAU, Navsari (E1), Cotton Research Sub Station, NAU, Achhalia (E2) and Regional Rice Research Station, NAU, Vyara (E3).

A study was undertaken to elicit information on the identification of maintainers and restorers for their utilization in hybridization programme as the parental lines. Hybrid rice is the best practically feasible and readily acceptable options available to increase the production. For the development of viable, adoptable rice hybrids through utilization of cytoplasmic genetic male sterility, the processes of identification of maintainers and restorers involving local elite lines has become inevitable.

To study the heterosis using wild abortive(WA) CMS lines on yield, quality and drought related traits in rice, 56 experimental hybrids were produced using Three WA CMS lines (Pusa 6A, IR79156A and IR 68897A) and 31 male genotypes. The present study showed that superior performance for all characters was not expressed in a single hybrid combination.

In order to exploit this novel male sterility in heterosis breeding, characterization of new TGMS lines and finding out critical stages for expression of sterility and fertility are very essential. In this context, the present study was taken up to fix the duration of critical sterility temperature expression of selected TGMS lines for hybrid seed production.

Genotype-environment interaction and stability analysis has been important for plant breeders and plays a vital role in identifying genotypes that are stable or unstable in each environment. Varieties that show low G x E interaction and high yield are desirable for crop breeders. The study was conducted in 2018 at six locations in India to determine the presence of G x E of 171 single cross maize genotypes and to use the GGE biplot methodology to determine grain yield performance and stability of the genotypes evaluated across six environments.

The investigation was carried out to estimate the component of genetic variability and associated parameters among 12 IRRI CMS lines and evaluated for morphological characteristics that influence outcrossing rate in hybrid rice. There was a marked variation in out crossing rate of CMS lines ranging from 18% to 45% under uniform weather conditions for all the CMS lines. Variation in plant height, number of panicle per plant and panicle length appeared to have an influence on outcrossing rate.

Hybrid technology in many crops has contributed 20-30 per cent increase in the production and exploitation of heterosis through the development of F1 hybrids which has been recently deployed in rice with yield advantage of 20-25 per cent over best pure lines. The main aim of any plant breeding programme is to develop special high yielding hybrids and success of any plant breeding programme depends on the choice of appropriate genotypes as parents in the hybridization programme.

Thirty two hybrids developed from crossing four CMS lines with 8 restorers were studied among with parents for 14 yield and yield attributing characters. Among the male parental lines, JGL 18047, IET 26264 and RNR 26060 appeared the best general combiners for yield and important yield component traits. The most promising specific cross combinations were JMS 13A x RNR 26060 and CMS 64A x WGL 14 for grain yield and most of the component characters.

In view to invigorate hybrid rice breeding and exploration of heterosis in untapped, low productive genetic pool of non-basmati aromatic rice, altogether thirtyF1’s were generated in L x T design fashion with thirteen parents (3 testers and 10 lines), and were evaluated along with the parents to unravel the combining ability for 28 yield and yield contributing traits. The study revealed importance of both additive and non-additive gene effects in governing yield and yield components with preponderance of non-additive gene action for most of the yield components.

Cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] is an important tropical legume crop, its grain contains about 25% protein and 64% carbohydrate, therefore, it is also called as a vegetable meat. In storage, Callosobruchus maculatus, also called cowpea beetle, cowpea weevil or bruchid, is regarded as the most important and common pest of cowpea both in Africa and Asia. All vigna crops except rice bean are susceptible to bruchids. So in this context in the present study the 100 stabilized families in F6 generation of cross between cowpea and rice bean were evaluated.

The results showed that HTL1, HTL2, HTL5, HTL7, and HTL8 were promising hybrid lines as they had short growth periods and high yields with good heat-tolerance. These rice lines were adapted well to both Winter-Spring and Summer-Autumn crops as indicated by the analysis of rice line and environment interaction.
