Linguistic diversity in Nepal

Nepal is a multi-ethnic and multi-lingual nation. However, the policies of one language, one culture and one religion adopted right from Prithvi Narayan Shah merely through Rana rulers to Panchayati rulers merely focused in consolidations power and sustaining dynasty rule deprived ethnic communities of their linguistic, cultural and religious rights. This article presents how ethnic communities were deprived of their linguistic rights and how they are gaining it after the restoration of multi-party democracy in 1990 and after the second people's movement in 2062/63 B.S.

Language planning and language Ideology in Nepal have not been really responsive to the linguistic diversity. Nepal is a multiethnic, multi-religious, multicultural, multilingual, federal and democratic-republican country. It has two linguistic lines – linguistic majority and linguistic minority. This paper deals with the language planning and Ideology in Nepal since Panchayat regime to the present. This paper also advocates the strategy for government of governance. It allows for decentralization of power and recognizes and protects the linguistics rights of all Nepalese.

English is being taught in diverse contexts around the globe. Teaching of English in multilingual and multicultural contexts in Nepal is one of the major challenges in ELT. The majority of classes in Nepal consist of linguistic and cultural diversity where students need to have different learning materials, methodologies and learning styles which help them minimize the problems of interaction and comprehension. This article presents both challenges and opportunities of teaching English in multicultural and multilingual contexts.
