Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP) Distance vector. Classless routing protocol. Released in 1992 with Cisco IOS Software Release 9.21. Enhancement of Cisco Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (IGRP). Both are Cisco proprietary. Operate only on Cisco routers. The term hybrid routing protocol is sometimes used to define EIGRP. Misleading, not a hybrid between distance vector and link-state Solely a distance vector routing protocol.

Link-State Routing Process 1. Each router learns about its own links, its own directly connected networks. (Interface is “up”) 2. Each router is responsible for meeting its neighbors on directly connected networks. (OSPF Hello packets) 3. Each router builds a link-state packet (LSP) containing the state of each directly connected link. (neighbor ID, link type, and bandwidth) 4. Each router floods the LSP to all neighbors, who then store all LSPs received in a database. Neighbors then flood the LSPs to their neighbors until all routers in the area have received the LSPs. 5.

Distance vector routing protocols are like road signs because routers must make preferred path decisions based on a distance or metric to a network. – Link-state routing protocols are more like a road map because they create a topological map of the network and each router uses this map to determine the shortest path to each network. – The ultimate objective is that every router receives all of the link-state information about all other routers in the routing area.

Most routing protocols fall into one of two classes: distance vector or link state. The basics of distance vector routing protocols are examined here; the next section covers link state routing protocols. Most distance vector algorithms are based on the work done of R. E. Bellman, L. R. Ford, and D. R. Fulkerson, and for this reason occasionally are referred to as BellmanFord or FordFulkerson algorithms. A notable exception is EIGRP, which is based on an algorithm developed by J. J. Garcia Luna Aceves....

The Complete IS-IS Routing Protocol- P19:IS-IS has always been my favourite Interior Gateway Protocol. Its elegant simplicity, its well-structured data formats, its flexibility and easy extensibility are all appealing – IS-IS epitomizes link-state routing. Whether for this reason or others, IS-IS is the IGP of choice in some of the world’s largest networks. Thus, if one is at all interested in routing, it is well worth the time and effort to learn IS-IS.
