  • Squilla (Oratosquilla nepa) was minced and divided into 3 lots. Each lot was treated with 3 different acids such as formic acid, hydrochloric acid and sulphuric acid, the pH was brought down to 3.5, 2.5 and 2.5 of the respective lot. Liquefaction of tissue was more pronounced in the first few days. Chemical, biochemical, microbiological characteristics and liquefaction rate of acid treated squilla were studied upto 90 days. Protein efficiency ratio of squilla silage (Formic acid) based diet is 0.58 and skim milk powder is 2.34.

  • The evaluation of liquefaction potential of soil due to an earthquake is an important step in geosciences. This article examines the capability of Minimax Probability Machine (MPM) for the prediction of seismic liquefaction potential of soil based on the Cone Penetration Test (CPT) data. The dataset has been taken from Chi–Chi earthquake. MPM is developed based on the use of hyperplanes. It has been adopted as a classification tool. This article uses two models (MODEL I and MODEL II). MODEL I employs Cone Resistance (qc) and Cyclic Stress Ratio (CSR) as input variables.

  • This is the first time the LPI based method was applied for evaluation of earthquake-induced liquefaction for Hanoi city. The most advantage of the method is that it can be easy to use, although the reliability of the results depends very much on number and distribution of the borehole data. Nevertheless, the combination of this method with other available methods can help effectively solving the problem of urban seismic risk assessment for the mega-cities in Vietnam.

  • Prompted by the need of non-petroleum-based fuels, coal research has reemerged to center stage after a lengthy dormant period. Pyrolysis research, in particular, has gained considerable momentum because of its close connection to combustion, hydropyrolysis and liquefaction. Spectroscopic and other instrumental techniques are currently producing prodigious information about coal structure and pyrolysis mechanisms, while modeling efforts are breaking new ground in sorting out chemical and physical phenomena to provide a fundamental although simplified description....

  • The charge to this committee—to envision the future of geotechnology— is at once a grand challenge and a problem. In many ways, geotechnology is a mature field having come to its majority in the last 50 years. Many serious problems have been solved. We know how to build strong foundations, safe dams, and stable roads and tunnels. We have a good understanding about the behavior and protection of groundwater, how to extract the petroleum resources, and develop a geothermal field.

  • After two centuries of almost absolute belief in technical and economic progress, human society is in a period of reconsideration and elaboration of new strategies for the ongoing new century. Progress of our civilization with an explosive rise in world population has led to an enormously increased con- sumption of resources and to an equal threat to the environment. Coping with these problems requires all intellectual abilities of our society. In this endeav- or, biotechnology is considered to play a significant role.

  • According to ASTM Standard Guide nondestructive term Test, the sound emission is usually defined as the class of phenomena whereby transient elastic waves generated by the rapid release of energy from source localization in the material. Energy consumption is essentially due to phase converter, crack formation and development, friction or movement of dislocations. Acoustic emission signal can be generated by phenomena such as cavitation, leakage, solidification and liquefaction.
