  • The basic and strategic research programs in litchi aim at developing technologies for enhancing productivity, quality, facilitating processing and value addition for increased net returns. The present literature has been, therefore, reviewed to clear the concepts and approaches involving the use of PGRs paving way for future litchi production. Physiological changes such as heavy fruit drop or early abscission in litchi might be due to the lack of hormones needed for the embryo and fruit development, lack of pollination and/or fertilization etc.

  • Litchi is a popular subtropical fruit crop in India. It is the most delicious, juicy and nutritious fruit and mostly grown in Eastern India. Litchi cultivation is a source of livelihood security for a large population in litchi growing states as it provides both on-farm and off-farm employment. The world scenario of litchi cultivation reveals that India is the second-largest producer of litchi after China with a total acreage over 93,300 ha and a yearly output of over 568,200 t in 2016-17. However, with a productivity level of just 6.

  • In fruit production, the effects of flowering and fruiting, which modify source-sink relationships, cannot be overlooked and is even more true in tropical fruit production, where the flowering and fruiting phases exceed six months at the individual tree scale. More specifically, little is known about the effects of source/sink balance, and the associated changes in carbon export rate from leaves and leaf carbohydrate concentration, like the ones resulting from the presence of developing fruits, on leaf nitrogen and photosynthetic capacity within the crown of field-growing trees.

  • Biological control represents an important approach to manage plant diseases. Blights of leaf, panicle and fruits caused by Alternaria alternata and the wilt caused by Fusarium solani are important diseases of litchi. Hence, as an alternative to chemical fungicides, biological control by Trichoderma spp. to manage pathogens of litchi was explored. The aim of this study was to isolate native Trichoderma spp. from litchi orchard ecosystem and to evaluate antagonistic potential and its biological fitness so as to develop a commercial formulation for field application to manage litchi diseases.
