Investigation of effective approaches for supporting students’ linguistic and intercultural competence in the process of learning English as an international lingua franca has generally been an issue of great concern for teachers and researchers in language education. The paper finally puts forward the suggestion that short literary texts of cultures around the world might be considered as one of the meaningful inputs in B1 EFL classrooms.

This article conducts a comparative analysis of the concept of invisibility within two literary works: The Absent (Nguoi di vang, in Vietnamese) by N.B. Phuong and As I Lay Dying by W. Faulkner. Chinese texts circulated widely in the Sinographic sphere, so much so that one can speak of an ‘East Asian book-road’. Books written in literary Chinese travelled mostly, but not exclusively, in one direction, from China to the neighbouring states. Vietnam was one of those states and in this article I examine how Vietnam fits into the East Asian book-road by considering the evidence for the transmission of Chinese texts to premodern Vietnam.

Many treatments of teacher questioning in reading and literature have defined teacher questioning as a cognitive process. Emanating from a reading comprehension perspective, this view of questioning argues that asking a variety of higher level questions will lead students from literal to more inferential levels of text understanding. Specifically, it studies how meanings in comics for children are constructed both verbally and visually.
