Cultivated crops have repeatedly faced new climatic conditions while spreading from their site of origin. In Sweden, at the northernmost fringe of Europe, extreme conditions with temperature-limited growth seasons and long days require specific adaptation.

Lentil is a self-pollinated annual diploid (2n = 2× = 14) crop with a restricted history of genetic improvement through breeding, particularly when compared to cereal crops. This limited breeding has probably contributed to the narrow genetic base of local cultivars, and a corresponding potential to continue yield increases and stability.

Tunisia is considered a secondary center of diversification of durum wheat and has a large number of abandoned old local landraces. An accurate investigation and characterization of the morphological and genetic features of these landraces would allow their rehabilitation and utilization in wheat breeding programs.

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp) is an important legume crop due to its high protein content, adaptation to heat and drought and capacity to fix nitrogen. Europe has a deficit of cowpea production. Knowledge of genetic diversity among cowpea landraces is important for the preservation of local varieties and is the basis to obtain improved varieties. The aims of this study were to explore diversity and the genetic structure of a set of Iberian Peninsula cowpea accessions in comparison to a worldwide collection and to infer possible dispersion routes of cultivated cowpea.

One of the main goals of the plant breeding in the twenty-first century is the development of crop cultivars that can maintain current yields in unfavorable environments. Landraces that have been grown under varying local conditions include genetic diversity that will be essential to achieve this objective.

Landraces are an important source of genetic diversity in common wheat, but archival collections of Afghan wheat landraces remain poorly characterised. The recent development of array based marker systems, particularly single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers, provide an excellent tool for examining the genetic diversity of local populations.

The present investigation was assessed using 100 F2 individuals, their parents and F1 for characters days to flowering, plant height, panicle length, productive tillers per plant, number of grains per panicle, grain yield per plant, straw yield per plant and harvest index. These traits are most important for identification of good segregating plants or genotype. Here, in the present study F2 population was developed from the cross between GAR-13 (improved and high yielding cultivar) and Lalkada (local landrace).

Productivity of rice is negatively affected by drought. Morpho-physiological traits are key for plant adaptation under water stress condition. This study was conducted with the objective to study the 49 local land races of rice including checks in field and PVC pipes for screening drought tolerant genotypes based on their yield performance and the effect of various physiological traits associated with drought tolerance were studied. Results revealed significant yield decline in almost all the genotypes studied under drought condition as compared to irrigated condition.

Hungarian Landrace Guinea Fowls are famous for their excellent meat quality produced by traditional free-range farming. The study aimed to identify the optimal size of a free-range area for keeping Hungarian Landrace Guinea Fowl, and to examine its effect in combination with quantitative feed restriction on growth performance, 486 birds were randomly distributed into 18 cages.
