The plasticity of monocytes enables them to exert multiple roles during an immune response, including promoting immune tolerance. How monocytes alter their functions to convey immune tolerance in the context of lower respiratory tract infections in humans is not well understood.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is rising at an alarming rate and complicating the management of infectious diseases including lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI). Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) is a recently established method for culture-independent LRTI diagnosis, but its utility for predicting AMR has remained unclear.

Whether procalcitonin (PCT) or C-reactive protein (CRP) combined with certain clinical characteristics can better distinguish viral from bacterial infections remains unclear. The aim of the study was to assess the ability of PCT or CRP combined with clinical characteristics to distinguish between viral and bacterial infections in hospitalized non-intensive care unit (ICU) adults with lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI).

The aim of this case–control study was to analyse the clinical characteristics of children with recurrent community-acquired pneumonia (rCAP) affecting different lung areas (DLAs) and compare them with those of children who have never experienced CAP in order to contribute to identifying the best approach to such patients.

Many patients with pneumonia and lower respiratory tract infection that could be treated as outpatients according to their clinical severity score, are in fact admitted to hospital. We investigated whether, with medical and social input, these patients could be discharged early and treated at home.

The aims of this study were to analyse the potential correlations between the risk of developing recurrent wheezing and the presence of specific polymorphisms of some genes regulating immune system function, and to study the relative importance of the associations of different viruses and genetic polymorphisms in causing recurrent episodes.

Lower respiratory tract infection (LRIs) is very common both in terms of community-acquired infection and hospital-acquired infection. Sputum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) are the most important specimens obtained from patients with LRI. The choice of antibiotic with which to treat LRI usually depends on the antimicrobial sensitivity of bacteria isolated from sputum and BALF.

Diagnosis of lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) depends on the presence of clinical, radiological and microbiological findings. Endotracheal suction aspirate (ETSA) is the commonest respiratory sample sent for culture from intubated patients. Very few studies have compared quantitative and semi-quantitative processing of ETSA cultures for LRTI diagnosis.

Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PCP) is an opportunistic fungal infection that is associated with a high morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised individuals. In this study, we analysed the microbiome of the lower respiratory tract from critically ill intensive care unit patients with and without pneumocystosis.

Many patients with bronchiectasis have recurrent hospitalisations for infective exacerbations. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is known to be associated with increased in-hospital mortality. This study examined the frequency of AKI, associated risk-factors, and the association of AKI with in-hospital mortality among patients with bronchiectasis.

A minority of patients presenting with lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) to their general practitioner (GP) have community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and require antibiotic therapy. Identifying them is challenging, because of overlapping symptomatology and low diagnostic performance of chest X-ray.

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a severe infection, with high mortality. Antibiotic strategies for CAP differ across Europe. The objective of the study was to describe the epidemiology of CAP in Denmark and evaluate the prognosis of patients empirically treated with penicillin-G/V monotherapy.

Though the declaration by the WHO of a ‘global TB emergency’ was in 1993, the emphasis has been more on adult disease. Pediatric TB was neglected, mainly due to greater challenges in diagnosis and the lower priority traditionally afforded to children by TB control programmes. As a result both research and surveillance data in the field of childhood TB have been greatly limited.

There has always been a controversy in bacteriological assessment of sputum samples in diagnosing lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs). Commonly in the Microbiological laboratory, expectorated sputum samples are microscopically examined for diagnosing LRTIs. The study was aimed to determine the diagnostic value of sputum gram’s stain and sputum culture in Lower Respiratory Tract Infections in a tertiary care hospital.

Lower respiratory tract infections are one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in children worldwide. Several viruses can cause bronchiolitis. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), parainfluenza viruses (PIV), influenza type A, adenovirus and human metapneumovirus (HMPV) are some of the common viruses found in hospital studies. This study aimed to study the molecular diagnosis of HPMV infections by using a realtime, reverse-transcriptase PCR assay and the evaluation of its prevalence among Egyptian infants clinically diagnosed with acute viral bronchiolitis.

LRTIs are one of the most common infectious diseases of humans. They are associated with morbidity and mortality worldwide. This study aims to find out the bacterial profile of lower respiratory tract infections in adults and the antibiotic susceptibility pattern of the isolated pathogen including detection of MRSA, ESBLs and MBLs. This study was conducted for a period of 6 months from March to August 2015 at a tertiary care hospital, Chennai. A total of 830 samples were collected during the study. They were processed following standard laboratory protocol.

Human bocavirus (HBoV) was first identified as parvovirus in 2005 in nasopharyngeal aspirates of children with lower respiratory tract infection. The objectives of this study were to determine HBoV as a cause of acute lower respiratory tract infection(ALRTI) in children by investigating the presence of HBoV DNA, to evaluate diagnostic efficiency of HBov IgM assay in the serum of the studied patients and to assess the impact of the viral load on the clinical manifestations of children with positive HBoV DNA samples.
