Lubricating oil film pressure

This paper introduces the resistance network model to calculate the hydrostatic pressure distribution of the oil lubrication film. The effect of geometry and working parameters on the pressure distribution is then analyzed. Among these parameters, the calculation results point out that the radial and axial clearance, as well as the eccentricity of the ring gear, have a significant effect on the hydrostatic pressure distribution.

This paper presents the experimental study of the lubricating oil film pressure of the connecting-rod big end bearing in the special device for the lubricating condition of the connecting-rod big end bearing. A connecting-rod model of photoelastic material is subjected to simulated load as in an engine. The oil film pressure is measured at different positions in the circumferential direction and the mid-section in length by a pressure sensor located on the shaft.

During the operating, the lubricated oil film pressure of hydrodynamic bearing is varied under the load apply and under the rotation speed. This pressure is one important characteristic when studying the lubrication problem for the bearing. An experimental device and the journal bearing are used to determine the pressure and the temperature of the lubricated oil film. The load is applied on the housing bearing. The journal bearing is subjected to different applied load at different velocities. Lubricant oil is circulatingly supplied via oil supply hole in the housing.

Load applied to the connecting-rod and the pressure in the lubricant oil film change the stress in the connecting-rod during the operating cycle. This problem is one of the characteristics we need to consider when studying the connecting-rod big end bearing. A specific experimental device and the connecting-rod model of photoelastic material are used to determine the load diagram, measure the oil film pressure, and visualize the state of stress. The connecting-rod is subjected to simulation load as in the engine.

Tower reported the results of a series of experiments intended to determine the best methods to lubricate a railroad journal bearing. Working with a partial journal bearing in an oil bath, he noticed and later measured the pressure generated in the oil film. Tower pointed out that without sufficient lubrication, the bearing operates in the boundary lubrication regime, whereas with adequate lubrication the two surfaces are completely separated by an oil film. Petrov [5] also conducted experiments to measure the frictional losses in bearings.
