Lugol’s iodine

The Bartholin's glands or greater vestibular glands are two glands located slightly posterior and to the left and right of the opening of the vaginal wall about 2.5 cm caudal to vagina. A 6 years old Murrah cross bred buffalo was reported as vaginal prolapse. Clinical examination revels, is unilateral bartholin gland cyst having 6 x 5.5 cm diameter. It was treated with 2% Lugol’s iodine solution, after evacuation of fluid from the cyst under caudal epidural anesthesia. After treatment animal recovered uneventfully and there is no recurrence. This is the first case report in buffalo.

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of Lugol’s Iodine in 20 infectious repeat breeder crossbred cows brought to the AI centre of Department of Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics of College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, Mhow and in nearby Government AI centres. Animals were divided into two groups of ten in each. The animals in first group were treated with intrauterine infusion of 0.3 per cent concentration of I2KI w/v dissolved in saline to make 30 ml at 24 hrs intervals for 2 days.

Two studies in Africa evaluated the feasibility of using two visual inspection methods for cervical cancer screening and assessed their performance in the field; the methods were VIA and visual inspection with Lugol’s iodine (VILI). Women in the studies were between 25 and 59 years of age, with at least 73 percent younger than age 45.

Late in the expansion phase (December 2003), the screening test was adjusted to add VILI as part of the algorithm. This was done after experience at the district hospital level and the completion of international studies involving more than 55,000 women in Asia and Africa showed VILI to be easier to interpret and significantly more sensitive than VIA. 10 Lugol’s iodine stains normal cervix tissue brown, while precancerous lesions (CIN) and cancerous lesions appear as a mustard yellow color.

The clinical care was based primarily on screening of women at health-center level by nurses using visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA), with visual inspection with Lugol’s iodine (VILI) being added to the screening algorithm later in the project. Since it was not considered feasible or cost- effective to offer treatment at every facility offering screening, women were referred to the district hospital for further management after a positive screening test. Nurses at the district hospital carried out cryotherapy, and more complicated cases were referred to the provincial hospital.
