  • A field investigation was made in an organized goat farm near thanjavur city with the history of sudden mortality due to respiratory distress. About 300 tellicherry adult goats are maintained in that farm. Bilateral serous to mucopurulent nasal discharge, lymphadenopathy and respiratory stridor were observed in few animals. Samples such as nasal swab, trans tracheal lavage, blood samples, fecal samples and lymph node aspiration smear were collected from affected animals aseptically for microbiological and parasitiological examination.

  • The study revealed, benign theileriosis, which is caused by Theileria orientalis conformed by using the PCR/ Blood smear/ Lymph node aspiration smear examination. The incidence of theileriosis was 24.21% to the total cases recorded in the veterinary hospital. Based on the clinical suspicion the incidence rate is 90.91%. The incidence rates of theileriosis in female animals (85%) were higher than male (15%) animals. Age 3-4 years (34%) and 5-6 years (20%) higher the Theileria incidence rate than the younger animals (9%).

  • One hundred cattle-calves irrespective of their age, sex and breed brought to Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex, College of Veterinary and Animal Science, Bikaner were screened for Theileria annulata infection. Blood and lymph node aspirate smears were prepared from the ear vein and enlarged superficial lymph nodes of suspected cattle-calves and stained with Giemsa’s stain for detection of piroplams and schizonts under oil immersion, respectively.

  • There has been a case report of exaggerated pigmented granulomatous reaction to the artificial joint implant in a 72-year-old man who had undergone bilateral total hip arthroplasty, in whom, aspirate from the inguinal region was misinterpreted as metastatic melanoma from an unknown primary. Microscopically, the smears of this patient showed both intracellular and extracellular black pigment with obscured cytomorphology; although, appreciable cells were reported to be pleomorphic with prominent nucleoli. The patient had no evidence of primary cutaneous melanoma.
