The present experiment was carried out using 51 genotypes at Vegetable Research Centre of G. B. P. U. A & T., Pantnagar, during kharif season of 2019. Mahalanobis D2 statistics was worked out using 11 quantitative characters to assess the degree of genetic divergence. On the basis of value generated using Tocher’s method, 51 genotypes were grouped into six clusters. Cluster I is largest with 42 genotypes followed by clusterII and III with 3 genotypes and cluster IV, V and VI containing 1 genotype in each.

The observations were recorded on five randomly selected plants and the mean values were subjected to Observations were recorded on 24 quantitative characters and data was subjected to statistical analysis using Mahalanobis D2 (1936) statistic to assess the genetic divergence. The genotypes were grouped on the basis of minimum generalized distance using the Tocher’s method (Rao, 1952).

Genetic diversity among sixty three okra genotypes was estimated using Mahalanobis D2 statistic. The genotypes were grouped into nine clusters. The maximum number of genotypes was found in cluster I (36) followed by cluster III (15) and Cluster II (6). Remaining all were solitary clusters with single genotype.

Genetic divergence of thirty genotypes of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) was assessed under normal and limited moisture conditions using Mahalanobis's D2 statistics (Mahalanobis, 1936). It was revealed that thirty genotypes were grouped into seven clusters in both the environments. Under normal condition spike length, membrane stability index, relative water content and test weight contributed maximum towards total genetic divergence.

The basis for genetic enhancement in any crop is systematic assessment of variability and genetic diversity available in the germplasm. The most widely used technique to assess the genetic diversity is Mahalanobis’s D2 statistic. In the present study, this technique has been applied to assess the diversity among 228 sorghum genotypes.
