The identification of lines resistant to ear diseases is of great importance in maize breeding because such diseases directly interfere with kernel quality and yield. Among these diseases, ear rot disease is widely relevant due to significant decrease in grain yield.

Increasing grain yield is a primary objective of maize breeding. Dissecting the genetic architecture of grain yield furthers genetic improvements to increase yield. Presented here is an association panel composed of 126 maize inbreds (AM126), which were genotyped by the genotyping-by-sequencing (tGBS) method.

Considering the importance of maize starch and the lack of knowledge about the effects of storage temperature on the isolated starch properties; maize grains were stored during 12 months at different temperatures (5, 15, 25 and 35 ◦C). The extraction yield and the physicochemical, thermal, pasting, crystallinity and morphological properties of starches were determined.

Mass spectrometry imaging of oligosaccharides following in situ enzymatic treatment of maize kernels
In recent years enzymatic treatment of maize has been utilized in the wet-milling process to increase the yield of extracted starch, proteins, and other constituents. One of the strategies to obtain this goal is to add enzymes that break down insoluble cell-wall polysaccharides which would otherwise entrap starch granules.

Hydropriming has the potential to ameliorate the stress-induced ill effects on yields of the crop plants and quality of seed produced. In the present study, half of the fresh seeds of maize hybrid, PEHM 5 and its parental lines (Female - CM 150, Male - CM 151) were subjected to accelerated aging test for bringing down the viability and vigour, thereby creating low vigour lots while high vigour lots consisted of fresh seeds, which were hydroprimed (30 h at 25°C). Half of the hydroprimed seeds were surface dried while the other half were redried back to the original moisture contents.

Small RNA (sRNA) sequences are known to have a broad impact on gene regulation by various mechanisms. Their performance for the prediction of hybrid traits has not yet been analyzed. Our objective was to analyze the relation of parental sRNA expression with the performance of their hybrids, to develop a sRNA-based prediction approach, and to compare it to more common SNP and mRNA transcript based predictions using a factorial mating scheme of a maize hybrid breeding program.

Starch biosynthesis in endosperm is a key process influencing grain yield and quality in maize. Although a number of starch biosynthetic genes have been well characterized, the mechanisms by which the expression of these genes is regulated, especially in regard to microRNAs (miRNAs), remain largely unclear.

Maize is one of the primary crops of genetic manipulation, which provides an excellent means of promoting stress resistance and increasing yield. However, the differences in induction and regeneration capacity of embryonic callus (EC) among various genotypes result in genotypic dependence in genetic transformation.
