The district Kapurthala is a fully diversified in cultivation of crops as the major cropping sequence followed is paddy-wheat, paddy-potato-muskmelon/watermelon/spring maize/ vegetables. The area under two crops namely sunflower and summer moong is uncertain and depends on the selling rate prevalent in the market at the time of harvesting and ease of marketing. DNA fingerprinting, estimation of molecular genetic diversity, marker assisted breeding and molecular diagnostic tools are the need of the hour for sugarcane crop improvement. Efficient extraction of genomic DNA (gDNA) free from polysaccharides, polyphenols, RNA and other major contaminants is a key to all these molecular activities. We present herewith, a modified DNA extraction protocol that has been optimized for isolating gDNA from endergonic and hardy sugarcane plant and its phytopathogens and endophytic fungi.

Molecular genetic markers correspond to highly potent source for the study of plant genomes and the association of inherited phenotypic traits with underneath genetic variation.
