Maize (Zea mays L.) is a major cereal crop, with the United States accounting for over 40% of the worldwide production. Corn leaf aphid [CLA; Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch)] is an economically important pest of maize and several other monocot crops. In addition to feeding damage, CLA acts as a vector for viruses that cause devastating diseases in maize.

A weed is essentially any plant which grows where it is not required. A weed can be thought of as any plant growing in the wrong place at the wrong time and doing more harm than good. Weeds are the most severe and widespread biological constraint to crop production, and cause invisible damage till the crop is harvested. The composition and competition by weeds are dynamic and dependent on soil, climate, cropping and management factors. Weeds decrease the value of land, particularly perennial weeds, which tend to accumulate on long fallows; increase cost of cleaning.

According to official statistics, the area annually planted to maize in Ghana currently averages about 650,000 ha (Table 1). Most of the maize grown in Ghana is cultivated in association with other crops, particularly in the coastal savannah and forest zones, so planting densities are generally low. Average grain yields of maize are correspondingly modest when expressed per unit land area, averaging less than 2 t/ha. Total annual maize production is currently estimated at just over 1 million tons.
