Major food grains in India

Rice the most important staple food in India. Declining soil fertility and high soil acidity is the major concern for low production in North–East India. The present study focuses on the effect of organic manures and liming on post harvest grain quality parameters and protein concentration of upland rice in North Eastern Hill Region of India.

Pulses, an important constituent of food grains, play a vital role in food and nutritional security of millions of down trodden people of the world. Being an important source of protein, poor people mostly depends on pulses for meeting their daily requirements of this essential nutrient. Pulses will form a major source of protein for a huge section of Indian particularly, for the poor, backward classes of the traditionally vegetarian population (Reddy, 2004).

The coastal belt of Odisha extends over 480 kilometers from mouth of Subarnarekha river in the north to the Chilika lake in the south. The plain occupies the outfall regions of major rivers like Mahanadi, Bramhani, Baitarani, Subarnarekha and Rusikulya. It covers one of the most fertile land in the eastern parts of the country and support the major food grain production in the state. But due to the proximity of sea, cyclonic hazard and saltwater ingress through tidal channels have restricted the availability of acceptable quality of water for irrigation as well as drinking.

India is facing various challenges in agriculture sector for sustaining soil fertility and food grains production, besides environmental degradation and food security of the country in the event of ever increasing demands of food grains production with limited cultivable land. Cultivable land and maintaining its soil fertility are one of the major tasks which supports about 17.6% of its population and leads to fact that, our natural resources are under considerable strain. Food grains are a major source of energy and are thus are vital for food and nutritional security.

Wheat is an important cereal crop grown all over the world. There are many abiotic and biotic stresses which affects the yield of the crop. Out of this, diseases are the principal cause which is responsible for the decrease in yield. Karnal Bunt is the major disease which affects quality of food grain. Black Point is also becoming a serious problem in Punjab. The analysis of 140 grain samples collected from different grain markets of 8 blocks of Tarn Taran district in Punjab was conducted during 2018-2019.

Rice is one of the most important food crops in the world. In India, rice contributes 43 per cent of the total food grain production and 46 per cent of the total cereal production. Rice crop is affected by many fungal, bacterial, viral and nematode diseases. Among the nematodes, rice root knot nematode (M. graminicola) is considered as a major problem in rice crop. In present study, a pot experiment was conducted to test the efficacy of oil cake against rice root knot nematode.

Wheat is the most important food crop in India. During 2017-18, India’s harvesting recorded wheat grain production 99.70 mt from 29.58 mha cultivated area. India’s participation in the international wheat trade however is not up to the mark as being a major wheat producer. One of the major constraints in exporting wheat is prevalence of Karnal bunt (KB), internationally quarantined disease in the Indo-gangetic plain, major wheat bowl of the country.

Green revolution has made India self-sufficient in food grain production. In most of the state of India cereal production is a surplus. But cereal production is not improving the economical condition of farmers. Vegetable cultivation is however considered as 2-3 times profitable than traditional cereal cultivation. Farmers can make more profit by cultivating vegetable after cereal crops. But in Rabi and Zaid seasons irrigation water availability is a major problem in rainfed areas.

Women of Rajasthan has to perform agricultural practices and contribute a major share of family economy in terms of food grains, oilseeds, vegetables, fruits, milk, wool, fuel, fiber, timber etc. The average sex ratio of the region is low. The literacy status of the women is also lower than their male counterpart. The participation of women in the tertiary sector such as medical, teaching, administrative and other official services is lower than the male population.

Pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) is a often cross-pollinated, diploid, grain. It is the fourth most important food legume in the world after dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), field pea (Pisum sativum) and chickpea (Cicer arientinum L.) The present study on marketing cost, marketing margin and price spread of pigeonpea was conducted in Latur market. For the present study different marketing channels, marketing margins, price spread and producers share in consumer’s rupee were calculated. The study was conducted for the year 2017-2018 in Latur market.

The present study attempt to provide credible estimates of future production of food grains (rice, wheat, coarse cereals, sugar cane and pulses) by testing differences in the production of different food grains, trend analysis and Correlation coefficient. It is estimated the correlation between the production of rice and wheat because of their major importance in India as an everyday food.
