Major fruit orchard soils

Plant nutrition plays a major role in quantitative and qualitative crop production in bringing sustainability and plants require seventeen essential elements for their normal growth and development. Among these, those elements required smaller in quantity is called micronutrients (Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, B, Cl, Mo and Ni). Micronutrients are essentially as important as macronutrients to have better growth, yield and quality in plants.

A survey study was conducted in one hundred and fifty pomegranate orchards situated in seven villages of Bagalkot district, Karnataka viz., Junnur, Seemikeri, Govinakoppa, Kaladagi, Sokanadagi, Chikkasamshi and Hiresamshi to assess the soil and plant major mineral nutrient concentration and its relation with pomegranate yield.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) and Soil inorganic carbon (SIC) are important as it determine ecosystem and agro-ecosystem functions influencing soil structure, soil fertility, water holding capacity, cation exchange capacity and other soil characteristics. It is also of global importance because of its role in the global carbon cycle(GCC). The understanding of soil carbon in terms of its amount and quality is essential to sustain the quality and productivity of soils.

The present study was aimed at evaluating the fertility status of mosambi orchards at Jamsar and Lunkaransar series of Bikaner district in irrigated area of arid Rajasthan. All mosambi orchards soils were found alkaline to saline in nature, EC2of all the orchard soil samples was normal. The CaCO3 content in soils showed increasing trend with depth, low in organic carbon and available N, Low to medium in available P2O5, Medium to high in available K2O content, Majority of samples were found low in available Fe and Zn content, low to sufficient in available Cu and high in available Mn content.

Turkey is the world’s largest producer of sweet cherries. The European cherry fruit fly, Rhagoletis cerasi L. (Diptera: Tephritidae), is a major pest of sweet cherry crops in Europe and Turkey. The detection of only one larva in the fruit by the processor can result in the rejection of the entire crop of that orchard and/or farm as “wormy” and unmarketable.
