Levodopa (biological precursor of dopamine) is sometimes used instead of dopamine for synthesis of highly adhesive polycatecholamine coatings on different materials. However, in comparison of polydopamine, little is known about biological safety of poly(levodopa) coatings and their efficacy in binding of therapeutically active substances.

Somatic mutations occurring within meristems of vegetative propagation material have had a major role in increasing the genetic diversity of the domesticated grapevine (Vitis vinifera subsp. vinifera). The most well studied somatic variation in this species is the one affecting fruit pigmentation, leading to a plethora of different berry skin colors. Color depletion and reversion are often observed in the field.

Inflammation is a major cause of cartilage destruction and leads to the imbalance of metabolic activities in the arthritic joint. Pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) has been reported to have both pro- and anti-inflammatory activities in various cell types and to be upregulated in the arthritic joint, but its role in joint destruction is unclear.

Drought is major abiotic stress around the world which posturing great challenges to the germination, growth and production of crops. Early crop growth stages like germination and seedling growth are very critical under drought. Seed treatment technologies are required to enhance the germination and stress tolerant index of the seedlings under drought condition. The investigation was aimed to carry out to assess the impact of PPFM (Pink Pigmented Facultative Methylotroph) and PGRs on alleviating the drought stress effects in tomato in early growth stage.

Water deficit is one of the major abiotic stresses which adversely affect the crop growth and yield. Moisture stress induce the metabolic functions, such as reduced synthesis of photosynthetic pigments, accumulation of osmoprotectants like proline, decline in the Chlorophyll stability and alterations in physiological parameters. The Field experiment was conducted at Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai during summer season 2016 with the variety of SVPR - 4.

The study revealed that flower color and hypocotyl pigmentation could be used as critical morphological characters for ascertaining varietal distinctiveness amongst genotypes. Of the 22 genotypes, few were utterly unique as they could be distinguished based on a single trait while the majority were very closely related. Cluster analysis revealed that the 22 genotypes could be grouped into four major clusters, whereby 13 genotypes were found to be unique based on at least one character and others could be distinguished based on a set of traits rather than a single trait.

Food color is one of the parameters impacting food quality and consumer acceptance to a significant level. Synthetic food colors are being used in many food products which are a major concern to human health, having allergic and carcinogenic affects. Therefore, efforts are being made to use natural food colorants from natural sources such as turmeric, saffron etc. Beetroot is one such material which is a source of betalain and is a rich source of many bioactive and phytochemical compounds which are known to provide several health benefits.

S. aureus is a major human pathogen capable of causing a wide range of infections and remains the second cause of nosocomial infections. To biochemically characterise the isolated coagulase-positive staphylococci, to determine its antimicrobial susceptibility and the MRSA status. 2220 samples were processed in the study period among which 150 were S. aureus, identified by Gram staining and coagulase test. Tests for characterisation included mannitol fermentation, demonstration of pigment production on milk agar, phosphatase test, DNase test, tellurite reduction test and urease production.

Colour patterns are the most distinct phenotypic traits in the majority of the living organism including fishes and considered as one of the main influencing factors in consumers’ buying decisions. Color traits are regulated by mainly four types of pigments stored in chromatophores. Melanin, is one of the most important pigment of cells, responsible for the coloration. Tyrosinase is a characteristics enzyme in melanin biosynthesis. Modulation of tyrosinase is of significance in the ornamental fish industry, food fishes as well as in humans.

Pigments play a very significant role in all aspects of life. They find application in a variety of industries like food industries, textile industries, pharmaceutical industries etc. One of the major reasons behind the increasing market interest for microbial pigments is their eco-friendly nature and their compatibility with the living. Besides this, they also reported to impart many additional benefits due to their anti-bacterial, anti-oxidant, antimalarial and anti-biotic properties etc.

Investigations were carried out to study the plant growth promotional ability of native pink pigmented facultative methylotrophs (PPFMs) of major chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) growing areas of North Karnataka. Selected isolates were screened for beneficial characters like production of phytohormones, phosphate solubilisation and siderophore production. Highest indole 3 acetic acid and gibberellic acid production was recorded in PPFM6, 19.77 and 128.28 g/ml of culture filtrate, respectively. The strain PPFM170 recorded highest cytokinin production (2.54 g/ml).

Retinoid-binding proteins are indispensable for visual cycles in both vertebrate and invertebrate retinas. These proteins stabilize and transport hydrophobic retinoids in the hydro-philic environment of plasma and cytoplasm, and allow regeneration of visual pigments. Here, we identified a novel retinol-binding protein in the eye of a butterfly, Papilio xuthus. The protein that we term Papilioretinol-binding protein (PapilioRBP) is a major component of retinal soluble proteins and exclusively binds 3-hydroxyretinol, and emits fluorescencepeakingat 480 nmunder ultraviolet (UV) illumination. ...

Flavonol 3-O-glucosides esterified with ferulic or p-coumaric acid at posi-tions 3¢¢ and 6¢¢ are the major UV-B screening pigments of the epidermal layer of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) needles. The last steps in the biosyn-thesis of these compounds are catalyzed by enzymes that transfer the acyl part of hydroxycinnamic acid CoA esters to flavonol 3-O-glucosides. A newly developed enzyme assay revealed three flavonol 3-O-glucoside hydroxycinnamoyltransferases (HCTs) in Scots pine needles with specifici-ties for positions 3¢¢,4¢¢ or 6¢¢. ...

The majority of lead contaminated sites in the Blacksmith Institute’s database are found in Africa, South America, South and Southeast Asia, but the problem of lead pollution plagues most developing countries worldwide. Its uses are varied; in Latin America it has often been utilized for ceramic glazing and in other countries leaded gasoline is still used. In the U.S. lead paint is the cause of a majority of lead exposures and such exposures can be expected in most countries since paint pigments using lead were commonly used worldwide up until a few decades ago.
