Historically, it has been found that malignancy is associated with superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome. The past decade has seen more cases of thrombogenic and stenotic SVC syndrome due to increased use of pacemakers and indwelling central lines. As compared to the slowly progressing obstruction in malignancy, rapid thrombogenesis rate and a lack of venous collateral sequelae lead to more acute sequelae in these patients.

Gastric outlet obstruction can occur secondary to intrinsic or extrinsic pathology. Historically peptic ulcer disease was the most common cause of gastric outlet obstruction but now malignancy-associated disease process is more common. Gastric outlet obstruction from mucosal ischemia caused by embolization of gastroduodenal artery is unheard of. This is due to the extensive blood supply of the stomach.

A fetal-onset cervical mass may cause postnatal airway obstruction, and ex utero intrapartum treatment (EXIT) to secure the airway while maintaining fetal-placental circulation may be life-saving. Malignant rhabdoid tumors (MRT) are highly aggressive tumors, and when they develop in utero, the prognosis is even worse, with almost no reports of survival beyond the neonatal period.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the lung is a distinctive salivary-gland-type malignant epithelial neoplasm that rarely presents as a primary tumor of the respiratory tract. Complete surgical resection remains the treatment of choice for adenoid cystic carcinoma.

For colorectal cancer, preoperative (neoadjuvant) chemotherapy is more effective than postoperative chemotherapy because it not only eradicates micrometastases more effectively but also reduces the risk of incomplete intraoperative resection and tumor cell shedding.

Endobronchial electrocautery is a common and safe therapeutic endoscopic treatment for malignant airway obstruction. Cerebral arterial air embolism (CAAE) is a rare but potentially fatal complication of endobronchial electrocautery.

CD147 is expressed in many tissues and is involved in many inflammatory diseases. Emerging evidence suggests that the overproduction of mucus is a malignant factor in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which results in severe airway obstruction and repeated airway infections.

Interventional bronchoscopy is considered an effective treatment option for malignant central airway obstruction (MCAO). However, there are few reports of interventional bronchoscopy in patients with MCAOs due to extra-pulmonary malignancy.

Malignant central airway obstruction (CAO) occurs in approximately 20–30% of patients with lung cancer and is associated with debilitating symptoms and poor prognosis. Multimodality therapeutic bronchoscopy can relieve malignant CAO, though carries risk.

Malignant central airway obstruction (MCAO) occurs in 20–30% of patients with primary pulmonary malignancy. Although bronchoscopic intervention is widely performed to treat MCAO, little data exist on the prognosis of interventional bronchoscopy.

Biliary obstruction is a serious clinical condition resulting from either benign or malignant etiologies. For malignant obstruction, curative resection is rarely performed due to disease progression, thus decompression drainage is the management of choice. Percutaneous transhepatic drainage and stenting are effective alternative treatments to surgical bypass and endoscopic biliary drainage when these two modalities are contraindicated.

Patients with unresectable malignant biliary obstruction have limited life expectancy because of limited stent patency and tumor progression. The aim of our study was to retrospectively evaluate the safety and efficacy of combining intraductal RFA with biliary metal stent placement for patients with malignant biliary obstruction.

Benign prostate hypertrophy (BPH) is a non- malignant condition characterized by proliferation of prostatic cells leading to an increase in prostate size, urethral obstruction, and lower urinary tract symptoms. For men, prostate hypertrophy with bladder outlet obstruction is reported to be the major predisposing factor for the development of asymptomatic bacteriuria.

The second domain, environmental pollutants, encompasses exposures that might bring about chronic conditions or exacerbate these conditions. We include in this domain air, water, and other toxic pollutants. For example, repeated exposure to toxic waste sites may result in malignancies later in life (American Cancer Society, 2002), which in turn may lead to functional decline (Teno et al., 2001; Michael et al., 2000). Thus, exposure to water contamination or toxic wastes is likely to affect health status, particularly though cumulated effects in the lifecourse.

In a series published by Peirson and Nickerson, one patient had 4 grams of tissue resected for histology during transurethral prostate biopsy and this was later found to be benign. However since DRE was suspicious for cancer a perineal punch biopsy with the Silverman needle was performed and this subsequently revealed malignancy (figure 7) (Peirson and Nickerson, 1943). Consequently Kaufman et al.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is the most common neoplastic condition afflicting men and constitutes a major health factor impacting patients in every part of the world. Bladder neck obstruction secondary to BPH can result in significant medical complications including renal failure, urinary retention, recurrent urinary tract infection, bladder stones, significant hematuria, and marked and disruptive bladder symptoms
