Plant breeding for resistance to agricultural pests is an essential element in the development of integrated crop management systems; however, the molecular and genetic mechanisms underlying resistance are poorly understood. In this pilot study, a transcriptomic analysis of a resistant (R) vs. a susceptible (S) variety of alfalfa, with (+T) or without (−T) thrips (= 4 treatments) was conducted, ‘GN-1’ (China) was defined as the resistant cultivar, and ‘WL323’ (America) was defined as the susceptible cultivar.

Insect-killing fungal species, Beauveria bassiana, is as an environment-friendly pest management tool, and many isolates are on the track of industrialization. However, some of B. bassiana isolates show similar morphology and virulence against insect pests, and so it is hard to differentiate them.

Eco-friendly IPM module for the management of major sucking pests of cotton was demonstrated in the farmer‟s field. Eco-friendly IPM module has significantly reduced the sucking pests population. The leafhoppers population was low (1.5 number / 3 leaves) in the demo plots and it was high (4.2 numbers/ 3 leaves) in the check plots. Similarly the aphids, thrips, whitefly and mealy bug population were low in the demo plots when compared to the check plots.

Field experiments were conducted during kharif 2005, to study the effect of organic amendments on the activity of chilli thrips and mites. In the nursery, seedlings receiving vermicompost (500 g/m2) and neem cake (100 g/m2) resulted in higher seedling vigour index, comparable to the standard check. Subsequently these seedlings were transplanted in the main field amended with vermicompost (2.5 t/ha), neem cake (0.5 t/ha), combined application of vermicompost and neem cake at half dosages and standard check receiving inorganic fertilizers and plant protection.

Silkworm gut bacterial isolates were identified by using 16S rRNA gene sequence data analysis. Total viable count, spore count and spore percentage were tested on selective NA medium and recorded at different hours interval. The highest value of total viable count was recorded (420 x 108CFU/ml), spore count was higher (100 x 108CFU/ml) after 72 h of inoculation.

A field trial was conducted at Regional Research station, NHRDF, Nashik in three consecutive years during Rabi 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 on onion variety Agrifound Light Red for the management of onion thrips by applying different doses of nitrogen as basal application. The result showed that, lowest mean thrips population (22.56 nymphs/plant) were recorded in without N (0 % Nitrogen), however, highest gross yield (306.89q/ha) was recorded in higher application of N (100% of the recommended dose as basal application through calcium nitrate).

An experiment was conducted for two consecutive years during rabi season of 2014-15 and 2015-16 to manage the onion thrips using three treatment modules viz., M1- IPM module, M2- Farmers’ practice and M3-Untreated control. It has been observed that the IPM module was the best in achieving the maximum leaf growth and bulb yield in both the years (2014-15 and 2015-16) followed by farmers’ practice module.
