Management of white grub

Field experiments were conducted in farmers holding during 2017-19 in view to develop ecofriendly strategies for the management of white grub in sugarcane crop. Various bio inoculants with required dose per hectare were prepared and multiplied in well decomposed farm yard manure of 50 kgs and mixed with 2500 kgs of decomposed FYM at the time of application for easy handling and applied near root zone during earthing up (during May/June).

The present study was conducted in Marathwada region of the Maharashtra State with an objective to find out the relationship between socio-economic and psychological characteristics of the respondents with their knowledge and adoption of integrated management of white grub. The data was collected from the respondents by personally interviewing them with the help of the specially designed interview schedule. The data were analyzed with the help of frequency, percentage, standard deviation and coefficient correlation.

White grub species Lepidiota mansueta having a biennial life cycle with non-feeding adults is recently occurred as a severe pest of Majuli, the largest river island in the world Biology of the beetle made it difficult for farmers to manage the pest conventionally. As emergency management of the beetle, scientists of „All India National Project (AINP) on white grubs and other soil arthropods‟ under Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat adopted a farmers‟ group approach considering the large-scale emergence of non-feeder adult beetles for the breeding purpose for a short period.
