Spent coffee ground (SCG) has attracted increasing attention since it contains many useful components such as polysaccharides, protein, lipid, and bioactive compounds. The aim of this research was to enhance the enzymatic hydrolysis to release important sugars in the SCG using different pretreatment methods. Spent coffee grounds were pretreated by alkali pretreatment, organosolv pretreatment, and the combined process

Four new chiral Schiff base ligands (3a–4a, 3b–4b) have been prepared using aminoisopropylidene derivatives of glucose and aminochloralose derivatives of mannose. The synthesized compounds 1 and 2 were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H and 13 C NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV/visible spectroscopy, and elemental analysis.

A novel lectin was isolated from leaves of the Japanese cycad,Cycas revolutaThunb. (gymnosperm), and its char-acteristics including amino acid composition, molecular mass, carbohydrate binding specificity and partial amino acid sequences were examined. The inhibition analysis of hemagglutinating activity with various sugars showed that the lectin has a carbohydrate-binding specificity similar to those of mannose recognizing, jacalin-related lectins.

The serotype a-specific polysaccharide antigen ofActinoba-cillus actinomycetemcomitansis an unusual sugar, 6-deoxy-D-talose.Guanosinediphosphate (GDP)-6-deoxy-D-talose is the activated sugar nucleotide form of 6-deoxy-D-talose, which has been identified as a constituent of only a few microbial polysaccharides. In this paper, we identify two genes encoding GDP-6-deoxy-D-talose synthetic enzymes, GDP-a-D-mannose 4,6-dehydratase and GDP-4-keto-6-deoxy-D-mannose reductase, in the gene cluster required for the biosynthesis of serotype a-specific polysaccharide anti-gen from A.

The Jacalin-related lectin (JRL) family comprises galactose-binding-type (gJRLs) and mannose-binding-type (mJRLs) lectins. Although the docu-mented occurrence of gJRLs is confined to the family Moraceae, mJRLs are widespread in the plant kingdom.
