The SB interest rate was decreased in March 2003, from 4% to 3.5%, when inflation was around 3%. In April 2010, after RBI changed the method of calculating interest on SB accounts, the depositors saw an increase in their returns on savings. However, the fluctuating inflation has been very high in recent years. The SB deposits are the major source of savings (investment) for many depositors, including pensioners, small savers and senior citizens. Not having the ability to be good money managers, such persons are getting high negative returns on their hard earned monies.

The period of camping (March and May) being a rainy season, coupled with the location of the camp, poor sanitation and drainage system could all encourage the breeding of mosquitoes (the malaria vector). The diarrhoea prevalence rate of 31.5% is equally higher than the value reported for the normal population of Nigeria (being 28%) (UNICEF, 2005). Diarrhoea is a major killer of children per annum the poor sanitary condition and unsafe water sources may be responsible for the observed higher prevalence of Diarrhoeas.

Our new insight is on the interaction between relative labor turnover dynamics and lack of insurers’ premium flexibility. A related possibility is that high labor turnover may be preferred by some employers, especially small firms that employ homogenous workers with low job-specific human capital. Workers tolerant of high turnover tend to be younger and healthier. By not offering health insurance, despite the tax advantage, these firms deter older and less healthy workers.
