The sediment quality assessment showed that trace element concentrations were lower than the limited values in the sediment quality guideline (QCVN 43:2017/BTNMT). According to the Igeo index, the sediments were not polluted by Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Fe, and As but were likely polluted by Hg and Mn in some sampling sites. Therefore, it is necessary to invest the future studies to assess the Hg and Mn concentration levels in these sites to protect the marine environment.

High-resolution marine seismic reflection studies on the eastern shelf of the Saros Gulf have revealed the presence of gascharged sediments across a narrow submarine valley incised by the Ganos Fault along the North Anatolian Fault system. Quaternary sediments, accumulated during glacial and interglacial periods through transgressional and progradational units, were controlled by glacio-eustatic sea-level fluctuations and tectonic deformation. The transgressional units made of upward-fining deposits created seals at their tops to form gas accumulation pockets.

The geochemical behavior of Pb in terrestrial and coastal water systems significantly influences Pb biogeochemical cycling and pollutant exchange at the land-sea continuum. An ideal case study of Pb environmental geochemistry is Galveston Bay, an anthropogenic estuary exposed to industrial runoff, wastewater and shipping vessel spills but also fed by natural rivers.

The sedimentary record confirmed that microplastics have been accumulating in these estuaries since the early 1950s, and their abundances have increased greatly in more recent years in response to the progressive urbanization of the watersheds and intensification of land uses. Our results highlight the role of salt marsh sediments as sinks for microplastics in the marine environment.

An analytical procedure for the analysis of carotenoids in marine sediments rich in organic matter has been developed. Analysis of these compounds is difficult; the application of methods used by other authors required optimization for the samples studied here.

Research on the profile of Fe in the seagrass ecosystem has been carried out. Analysis of seawater, sediment, seagrass samples from the association of mangroves, mangroves-coral reefs and coral reefs taken in the waters of Donggala Regency was carried out using the ICP-OES method (Inductively Coupled Plasma-Opticaly Emission Spectrometry).

The lugwormArenicola marinainhabits marine sediments in which sulfide concentrations can reach up to 2 mm. Although sulfide is a potent toxin for humans and most animals, because it inhibits mitochondrial cyto-chromec oxidase at micromolar concentrations,A. marinacan use elec-trons from sulfide for mitochondrial ATP production.

Sudden shifting of the ocean floor due to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and submarine slumping. open ocean: short heights, long wavelengths (100 km), and long periods 400500 mph!!! shallow water: their length shortens and their height increases dramatically. These are NOT tidal waves
