Based on a streamlined presentation of the author’s successful work, An Introduction to Frames and Riesz Bases, this book develops frame theory as part of a dialogue between mathematicians and engineers. Newly added sections on applications will help mathematically oriented readers to see where frames are used in practice and engineers to discover the mathematical background for applications in their field. The book presents basic results in an accessible way and includes extensive exercises.

From its beginnings in the middle of the 20th century, the field of systems dynamics and feedback control has rapidly become both a core science for mathematicians and engineers and a remarkably mature field of study.

The proposed book contains a lot of recent research devoted to numerical simulations of physical and engineering systems. It can be treated as a bridge linking various numerical approaches of two closely inter-related branches of science, i.e. physics and engineering. Since the numerical simulations play a key role in both theoretical and application-oriented research, professional reference books are highly required by pure research scientists, applied mathematicians, engineers as well post- graduate students....

A good model is provided by astrobiology, which studies the origin, evolution and distribution of life in the universe. Physicists, chemists, astronomers, earth scientists and biologists have been able to come to- gether to tackle such problems as how life began; whether life could exist on Mars, Europa or Titan; and what range of extreme environments micro-organisms may tolerate. So far, there has been little dialogue between cancer biologists and astrobiologists, but this is set to change.

The biological sciences have become more quantitative and information-driven since emerging computational and mathematical tools facilitate collection and analysis of vast amounts of biological data. Complexity analysis of biological systems provides biological knowledge for the organization, management, and mining of biological data by using advanced computational tools. The biological data are inherently complex, nonuniform, and collected at multiple temporal and spatial scales.

Mathematics is used throughout the world as an essential tool in many fields, including natural science, engineering, medicine, and the social sciences. Applied mathematics, the branch of mathematics concerned with application of mathematical knowledge to other fields, inspires and makes use of new mathematical discoveries, which has led to the development of entirely new mathematical disciplines, such as statistics and game theory. Mathematicians also engage in pure mathematics, or mathematics for its own sake, without having any application in mind.

In real life, we can tell where objects are by measuring distance between them. As for placing them, moving them, and keeping track of where they are nature has developed a pretty good system. On the computer though, we have to somehow keep track of objects in a 3D scene. Mathematicians have developed the coordinate system. You have probably learned in geometry about the X and the Y axis. Well, these two axis define a coordinate plane, that is, a two dimentional world. However, to work in three dimentions, we need one more axis, the Z axis....

In the nineteenth century, scientists, mathematician, engineers and innovators started investigating electromagnetism. The theory that underpins wireless communications was formed by Maxwell. Early demonstrations took place by Hertz, Tesla and others. Marconi demonstrated the first wireless transmission. Since then, the range of applications has expanded at an immense rate, together with the underpinning technology. The rate of development has been incredible and today the level of technical and commercial maturity is very high.

Biomedical Engineering is an exciting and emerging interdisciplinary field that combines engineering with life sciences. The relevance of this area can be perceived in our everyday lives every time we go to hospital, receive medical treatment or even when we buy health products such as an automatic blood pressure monitor device. Over the past years we have experienced a great technological development in health care and this is due to the joint work of engineers, mathematicians, physicians, computer scientists and many other professionals....

For quite a long time, computer security was a rather narrow field of study that was populated mainly by theoretical computer scientists, electrical engineers, and applied mathematicians. With the proliferation of open systems in general, and of the Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW) in particular, this situation has changed fundamentally. Today, computer and network practitioners are equally interested in computer security, since they require technologies and solutions that can be used to secure applications related to electronic commerce.

MATLAB®, developed by The MathWorks, Inc., integrates computation, visualization, and programming in a flexible, open environment. It offers engineers, scientists, and mathematicians an intuitive language for expressing problems and their solutions mathematically and graphically. Complex numeric and symbolic problems can be solved in a fraction of the time required with a programming language such as C, Fortran, or Java.

Bioinformatics ? Biology and Computers ? What do they have to do with each other? I suppose that this question could have been raised even in 19th century when technologies of computers and biology were just emerging. At one city in France the great Louis Pasteur (1822-1895) was studying how fermentation of alcohol was linked to the existence of a specific microorganism. In another city in England, equally great Charles Babbage (1791-1871) was oiling his Analytical Engine in which Ada Lovelace, a mathematician who understood Babbage's vision, was trying to calculate the Bernoulli numbers.

This textbook introduces sparse and redundant representations with a focus on applications in signal and image processing. The theoretical and numerical foundations are tackled before the applications are discussed. Mathematical modeling for signal sources is discussed along with how to use the proper model for tasks such as denoising, restoration, separation, interpolation and extrapolation, compression, sampling, analysis and synthesis, detection, recognition, and more. The presentation is elegant and engaging.

If you are a very talented scientist/mathematician, it is important that out of the four available sciences – Biology, Chemistry, Maths (which includes both Mathematics and Further Mathematics) and Physics – you should choose three. If you know you are inclined towards the life sciences then you should choose Chemistry and Biology. If you know you are on the engineering side you should choose Mathematics (and possibly Further Mathematics) and Physics.

The aim of this expository article is to shed light on the role that mathematics plays in the advancement of medicine. Many of the technological advances that physicians use every day are products of concerted efforts of scientists, engineers, and mathematicians. One of the ubiquitous applications of mathematics in medicine is the use of probability and statistics in validating the effectiveness of new drugs, or procedures, or estimating the survival rate of cancer patients undergoing certain treatments.
