Maturity and harvesting
-
A key developmental transformation in the life of all vertebrates is the transition to sexual maturity, whereby individuals are capable of reproducing for the first time. In the farming of Atlantic salmon, early maturation prior to harvest size has serious negative production impacts.

Weather change in high-altitude areas subjects mature tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) to cold stress, which damages tobacco leaf yield and quality. A brupt diurnal temperature differences (the daily temperature dropping more than 20 °C) along with rainfall in tobacco-growing areas at an altitude above 2450 m, caused cold stress to field-grown tobacco.

Thirty six diverse genotypes of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L. Czern and Coss.) were evaluated for ten quantitative. The variability indicates that Genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) was moderate for 50% flowering, days to maturity, total no. of siliqua per plant, biological weight, test weight and seed yield; low for plant height, no. of siliqua on main shoot, no. of seed per siliqua and harvest index.

An experiment was conducted to study the effect of edible coating and packaging material on physiological and sensory quality of litchi fruits. For this, mature litchi fruits were harvested from HRC, Patharchatta and the selected fruits were treated with Guar Gum, Xanthan Gum and Methyl cellulose (low viscosity and high viscosity)as edible coating at different concentration (0.5%, 1.0%, 2.0%, 2.5%) and stored at 4 ± 1 °C under 90 ± 5% RH.

Horse gram is highly proteinaceous important food legume crop. The present study was conducted at IGKV, RMD CARS, research and instructional farm Ambikapur, during Kharif2019 using 24 genotypes of horse gram. The observation was recorded for eleven characters viz., days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, plant height, number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant, pod length, number of seed per pod, 100 seed weight, seed yield, biological yield and harvest index to study the correlation and path coefficient analysis.

Bananas are among the world‟s leading food crops, after rice, wheat and maize. Banana is a dessert fruit for millions and it contains nearly all the essential nutrients. Banana accounts for 31.7 per cent of the total fruit production in India. It has short shelf life of 6- 10 days under tropical condition. Converting this perishable fresh fruit into shelf stable high value products like powder flour will be of immense value. The present study was undertaken to develop health mix from `Chakkai banana variety.

The present experiment was conducted during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 with sixty genotypes of fennel for the assessment of seed quality and vigour. Seeds of different genotypes were collected from different locations of India (Gujarat, Haryana, Rajasthan, Bihar etc.). These diverse genotypes were sown (13 November 2015 for first year and 11 November 2016 for second year) with Augmented block design and seed harvesting (20 May, 2015 for first year and 25 May 2017 for the second year) was done after full maturity.

The study on effect of packaging and storage condition on the shelf life and chemical composition of mango cv. Himsagar was carried out at Department of Post-Harvest Technology of Horticultural Crops, Faculty of Horticulture, BCKV, Nadia. The fruits of cultivar were harvested at fully mature but unripe stage and were packed in different packages (Un-perforated LDPE, Perforated LDPE, Plastic crate, CFB box and Perforated LDPE with CFB box) and placed in cold store (12±1ºC; 85-90% RH) whereas control was without packaging under ambient condition.

The total organic acid content in papaya was relatively low and tends to decrease from young fruit stage to ripe fruit stage. Based on this study results, Taiwanese papaya fruit should be harvested after physiological maturity and before ripening completely (from 13 weeks of age to 15 weeks of age) to ensure the nutritional value of the fruit during storage.

Disease score was recorded at maturity stage by counting number of infected plants in each line and the per cent disease incidence was calculated. The disease intensity was scored adopting the following 1-9 score (Singh et.al., 1988) (Table-1). On maturity 100 random plants of each entry selected and harvested separately from which the average plant yield of each entry calculated.

Seedling mango (Mangifera indica L.) with wide variations in its quality characteristics has been found in the vast tract of lower hills of HP (Himachal Pradesh). It has got tremendous potential for the production of various traditional products including pickle, since brining is an important interface between harvesting and pickle production, so studies were aimed to see the quality changes of mature green fruit from different locations of HP in brine.

Longan (Dimocarpus longan Lour) is the delicate fruit of immense value. Its production in Asia pacific regions countries including China, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and India has shown a rise in last few years. Longan has a widespread postharvest use but, the major hindrance in its PHM (Postharvest management) is its poor shelf life. Its proper postharvest management starts from judging horticultural maturity and retaining all its sensory characteristics which are important for its consumer appeal. There are several problems which need to be taken care during its PHM.

The present study emphasized on determination of the nature and magnitude of variability, heritability and genetic advance on yield and yield attributing characters in 19 potato genotypes harvested on different date. The estimation of correlation co-efficient among the characters along with their direct and indirect effect on yield is necessary to carry out proper selection on the basis of the traits. Wide ranges of variation have been observed for all the traits both in early and late harvesting situation.
