  • Studying the dynamics of soil organic carbon (SOC) is important for understanding the carbon stabilization into different pools. Thus, a 25-year old experiment was used to assess the impact of double rice cropping system with addition of organics and grades of fertilization on labile carbon pools and crop yield sustainability in an Inceptisol in southern India. The total water stable aggregates (WSA) in the experimental soils ranged from 70.4 to 94.9% under different treatments.

  • Ninety-three early generation sugarcane clones were evaluated for different morphological and juice quality characters among early generation sugarcane clones. Highest genotypic coefficient of variance (GCV) and phenotypic coefficient of variance (PCV) were recorded for Number of millable cane (NMC) and single cane weight respectively. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance as percent of means was observed for germination percent, NMC/hectare, cane height and inter node length. It indicated that direct selection of those traits would be effective.

  • The main objective of this study was to assess the effect of conventional and protected systems of farming on soil physical parameters. Texture across the various sites varied from sandy loam to clay loam. Mean of two years (2015 and 2016) revealed comparatively lower bulk density inside protected cultivation (1.12 Mg m-3 ) as compared to conventional system (1.24 Mg m-3 ). There were as such no differences were observed in particle density. However, porosity and water holding capacity differ inside protected and conventional system of production.

  • An experiment was conducted with fifteen early maturing sugarcane clones to assess the genetic parameters for various productive traits. The analysis of variance revealed highly significant differences among the clones for twenty one traits and significant for rest traits viz., purity at 8 month & pol in cane at harvest. The Variability studies showed moderate estimates of GCV and PCV for traits viz., single cane weight and cane yield at harvest. In present set of materials high heritability with high genetic advance as per cent of mean was found in cane yield at harvest.

  • An experiment was conducted to study the combining ability analysis using six parental genotypes and thirty hybrids of pumpkin obtained through full diallel analysis for yield and its attributing traits. The mean sum of square due to general combining ability (gca) and specific combining ability (sca) were significant for nodes to first female flower, days to harvest, fruit weight, fruit length, fruit diameter and number of seeds per fruit. The ratio of gca/sca was less than one for the character nodes to first female flower indicated the preponderance of dominance expression.
