Research study sheds additional light on Americans’ financial fragility (Lusardi). Respondents were asked about confidence in their ability to come up with $2,000 in 30 days. This figure was chosen because it represents the approximate cost of an everyday emergency, like a major car or home repair, medical expense copay or legal expense. One quarter of survey respondents stated that they certainly could not come up with this sum of money, and another 15% probably could not do so. This finding suggests that nearly half of Americans are incapable of coping with a moderate financial shock.

The results show that the medical staff effective dose is highly dependent on the position of the medical staff. The results also show that the maximum medical staff effective dose in an emergency situation in the presence of a patient is ~25.5 mSv/s.

The Nipah and Hendra viruses are highly pathogenic paramyxoviruses that recently emerged from flying foxes to cause serious disease outbreaks in humans and livestock in Australia, Malaysia, Singapore and Bangladesh. Their unique genetic constitution, high virulence and wide host range set them apart from other paramyxoviruses. These characteristics have led to their classification into the new genus Henpaviruswithin the family Para-myxoviridae and to their designation as Biosafety Level 4 pathogens. ...

The availability of extensive genomic information and content has spawned an era of high-throughput screening that is generating large sets of func-tional genomic data. In particular, the need to understand the biochemical wiring within a cell has introduced novel approaches to map the intricate networks of biological interactions arising from the interactions of proteins.

The newly emerging field of systems biology involves a judicious interplay between high-throughput ‘wet’ experimentation, computational modelling and technology development, coupled to the world of ideas and theory. This interplay involves iterative cycles, such that systems biology is not at all confined to hypothesis-dependent studies, with intelligent, principled, hypothesis-generating studies being of high importance and consequently very far from aimless fishing expeditions.

The studies on calcium sensor calcineurin B-like protein (CBL) and CBL interacting protein kinases (CIPK) are limited to Arabidopsisand rice and their functional role is only beginning to emerge. Here, we present cloning and characterization of a protein kinase (PsCIPK) from a legume, pea, with novel properties.

Both microtubule destabilizer and stabilizer agents are important molecules in anticancer therapy. In particular, paclitaxel has been demonstrated to be effective for the treatment of ovarian, breast, and nonsmall cell lung carci-nomas. It has been shown that emergence of resistance against this agent correlates with an increase in the relative abundance of tubulin isoform bIII and that the more recently discovered IDN5390 can be effectively used once resistance has emerged.

Synchronous Ca 2+ oscillation occurs in various cell types to regulate cell-ular functions. However, the mechanism for synchronization of Ca 2+ increases between cells remains unclear. Recently, synchronous oscillatory changes in the membrane potential of internal Ca 2+ stores were recorded using an organelle-specific voltage-sensitive dye [Yamashita et al. (2006) FEBS J273, 3585–3597], and an electrical coupling model of the synchro-nization of store potentials and Ca 2+ releases has been proposed [Yamash-ita (2006) FEBS Lett580, 4979–4983]....

Several years ago, before the advent of Internet shopping, I bought an old issue of Life magazine from a shopping mall kiosk in Knoxville, Tennessee. It was the September 15, 1961, issue and had a picture of a man in a “civilian fallout suit” on the cover with the title “How You Can Survive Fallout.” I browsed through the magazine thinking that it represented an era that we had moved beyond. I had no idea that the events occurring exactly 40 years after publication of this particular issue would launch another era during which, once again, we would be concerned about this possibility....

Heterozygous loss-of-function mutations at the glucosecerebrosidase locus have recently been shown to be a potent risk factor for Lewy body disease. Based on this observation, we have re-evaluated the likelihood that the dif-ferent PARK loci (defined using clinical criteria for disease) may be misleading attempts to find common pathways to pathogenesis.

The last decade has seen clear links emerge between the genetic determi-nants and neuropathological hallmarks of parkinsonism and dementia, notably with the discovery of mutations ina-synuclein and tau. Following the description of mutations in LRRK2 linked to Parkinson’s disease, char-acterized by variable pathology including eithera-synuclein or tau deposi-tion, it has been suggested that LRRK2 functions as an upstream regulator of Parkinson’s disease pathogenesis.

Rare, inherited mutations causing familial forms of Parkinson’s disease have provided insight into the molecular mechanisms that underlie the genetic and sporadic forms of this disease. Loss of protein function result-ing from autosomal-recessive mutations in PTEN-induced putative kinase 1 (PINK1), Parkin and DJ-1 has been linked to mitochondrial dysfunction, accumulation of abnormal and misfolded proteins, impaired protein clear-ance and oxidative stress.

An emerging body of evidence supports a key role for the endocannabinoid system in numerous physiological and pathological mechanisms of the cen-tral nervous system. In the recent past, many experimental studies have examined the putative protective or toxic effects of drugs interacting with cannabinoid receptors or have measured the brain levels of endocannabi-noids inin vitro and in vivo models of cerebral ischemia.

Tuberculosis (TB) continues to be a major cause of morbidity and mortal-ity worldwide. The increasing emergence and spread of drug-resistant TB poses a significant threat to disease control and calls for the urgent devel-opment of new drugs. The tryptophan biosynthetic pathway plays an important role in the survival of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
