Quality of life after open heart surgery shows the level of impact on the patients; moreover, it also reflects physical, functional, and psychosocial decline caused by diseases of the entity. This study evaluates the characteristics of quality of life of patients one month after open heart surgery according to the SF-36 health scale at Hue Central Hospital.

Brachytherapy is a form of radiotherapy in which radioactive sources are placed at short distances from, or even inside the target volume. The use of high dose rate brachytherapy is a widely accepted and clinically proven treatment for some stages of prostate cancer. The aim of this project was to investigate potential improvements on two of the most important aspects of high dose rate (HDR) and pulsed dose rate (PDR) prostate brachytherapy - prostate definition and treatment delivery verification.

The aim of this thesis is to ensure that accurate calibration factors are provided to radiotherapy clinics when moving to the new linac-based primary standard calibrations. Specifically, this thesis quantifies the error introduced when using a calibration factor from the ARPANSA Elekta linac on a Varian high energy platform beam at 6 MV.

The purpose of the study is to quantify breast dose to reassure patients and staff that these understandings still apply. A combination of measurements and simulations were used to estimate absorbed breast dose. Gafchromic® XR-QA2 film was used to measure breast dose placed inside the RANDO® phantom in a series of controlled experiments. The RANDO® is an anthropomorphic phantom commonly used for dosimetry investigations. Gafchromic® XR QA2 film is a radiochromic film that changes colour when irradiated. Simulation is commonly used and readily available.

The overall aim of this study is to determine the most effective way to reduce the radiation dose to the breast during non-breast related CT scans, whilst still maintaining a suitable image quality. This study will attempt to compare the doses and noise of various protocols that can be used for dose reduction, including tube current modulation, bismuth breast shields and manual reduction of tube current.

The aim of this thesis was to investigate and characterise the effect on electron dosimetry that localising different forms of bolus, both approximately tissue equivalent and non tissue equivalent, in a non conventional, although reproducible locations, (ie not on the phantom surface). A series of experiments were derived to compare the differences in beam characteristics between the recognised conventional method of locating bolus on the surface to that of bolus supported by the Low Melting point Attenuator (LMA) Electron insert.

This thesis aims to build on the current body of knowledge relating to the tertiary radiation contributions within an interventional radiology suite. An accurate estimation of tertiary radiation requires knowledge of the amount of patient-scattered radiation incident onto the concrete ceiling (the patient-scattered air kerma) and the fraction of the radiation incident on concrete that is scattered back towards the point of interest (the concrete-scattered air kerma).

Keeping poultry makes a substantial contribution to household food security throughout the developing world. It helps diversify incomes and provides quality food, energy, fertilizer and a renewable asset in over 80 percent of rural households. Small-scale producers are however constrained by poor access to markets, goods and services; they have weak institutions and lack skills, knowledge and appropriate technologies. The result is that both production and productivity remain well below potential and losses and wastage can be high.

The phenomenon of the transformation of proteins into amyloid-fibrils is of interest, firstly, because it is closely connected to the so-called conformational diseases, many of which are hitherto incurable, and secondly, because it remains to be explained in physical terms (energetically and structurally). The process leads to fibrous aggregates in the form of extracellular amyloid plaques, neuro-fibrillary tangles and other intracytoplasmic or intranuclear inclusions.

Mammalian alcohol dehydrogenases (ADH) 3 form a com-plex enzyme system based on amino-acid sequence, func-tional properties, and gene expression pattern. At least four mouseAdhgenes are known to encode dierent enzyme classes that share less than 60% amino-acid sequence iden-tity. Two ADH-containing and overlapping C57BL/6 bacterial arti®cial chromosome clones, RP23-393J8 and -463H24, were identi®ed in a library screen, physically mapped, and sequenced.

Endotoxin-neutralizingprotein (ENP) of the horseshoe crab isoneof themost potent neutralizersof endotoxins [bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS)]. Here, we report on the inter-action of LPS with recombinant ENP using a variety of physical and biological techniques. In biological assays (Limulusamebocyte lysate and tumour necrosis factor-a induction in human mononuclear cells), ENP causes a strong reduction of the immunostimulatory ability of LPS in a dose-dependent manner.

The transient receptor potential channel vanilloid receptor subunit 1 (TRPV1) is amolecular integrator of physical and chemical stimuli in the peripheral nociceptor terminals. TRPV1 is an ionotropic channel that plays a critical role in both thermal nociception and inflammatoryhyperalgesia. Structure–function relationships are providing fundamental insights of the modular architecture of this neuronal recep-tor.

The nano-scale spatial organization of metallic and other inorganic materi-als into 1D objects is a key task in nanotechnology. Nano-scale fibers and tubes are very useful templates for such organization because of their inherent 1D organization. Fibrillar biological molecules and biomolecular assemblies are excellent physical supports on which to organize the inor-ganic material.

Sister chromatid cohesion is important for the correct alignment and segre-gation of chromosomes during cell division. Although the cohesin complex has been shown to play a physical role in holding sister chromatids together, its loading onto chromatin is not sufficient for the establishment of sister chromatid cohesion.

We investigated the soluble forms of the earliest activation antigen of human leukocyte CD69. This receptor is expressed at the cell surface as a type II homodimeric membrane protein. However, the elements necessary to prepare the soluble recombinant CD69 suitable for structural studies are a matter of controversy.

Vnd is a dual transcriptional regulator that is essential forDrosophila dor-sal–ventral patterning. Yet, our understanding of the biochemical basis for its regulatory activity is limited. Consistent with Vnd’s ability to repress target expression in embryos, endogenously expressed Vnd physically asso-ciates with the co-repressor, Groucho, inDrosophilaKc167 cells.

Ca 2+ regulates a multitude of cellular processes and does so by partition-ing its actions in space and time. In this review, we discuss how Ca 2+ responses are constructed from small quantal (elementary) events that have the potential to propagate to produce large pan-cellular responses. We review how Ca 2+ is compartmentalized both physically and functionally, and describe how each organelle has its own distinct Ca 2+ -handling prop-erties.

Opioid analgesics such as morphine and meperidine have been used to control moderate to severe pain for many years. However, these opioids have many side effects, including the development of tolerance and dependence after long-term use, which has limited their clinical use. We previously reported that mutations in the muopioid receptors (MOR) S196L and S196A rendered them responsive to the opioid antagonist naloxone without altering the agonist phenotype. In MORS196A knock-in mice, naloxone and naltrexone were antinociceptive but did not cause tolerance or physical dependence.
