It generally is reserved for postbaccalaureate students who are enrolled in health curricula associated with medicine, dentistry, nursing, and the veterinary sciences; however, certain upper level undergraduates are interested in the subject. This book is the product of teaching undergraduates the principles of pharmacology over the last 20 years.

  • My journey within the field of spirituality and mental health has been an interesting one. It began 30-odd years ago on the day that I wandered into my first psychiatric ward, a student psychiatric nurse with not much of a clue about anything. In this strange land of madness, medication and control, spiritualitywas not a priority and the idea of spiritual care as a discrete aspect of nursing was not really on the agenda either in terms of education or practice. It’s not so much that it was avoided, it simply wasn’t an issue....

  • This project began many years ago in the nether regions of Widener Library at Harvard. As a graduate student in the History of Science, I became interested in medical views and treatment of women and studied "the cult of female invalidism" that pervaded American culture in the late nineteenth century. Browsing through popular magazines and newspapers of the period, I therefore was surprised to find images of healthy women—young girls playing croquet and badminton, ladies exercising at home in loose-fitting garb, college students riding bikes and rowing boats....

Although over the past 35 years, previous editions of Kistner have appealed largely to students, trainees, and practitioners in gynecology, this new edition should be useful not only for gynecologists but for internists, family practitioners, and women's health specialists who are devoting more of their time and effort to women's medical issues.

  • This book is primarily aimed at undergraduate students reading medicine, nursing and midwifery, and subjects allied to health. It will also be useful to professionals undergoing continuing professional development (CPD) or changing to an extended role who require a background covering physiology and pathology for haematology and biochemistry. Since the book uses “example boxes” to explain complex terms in lay language, it should also be accessible to patients and people with a non-clinical background but an interest in the subject.
