Medicinal properties

This study focuses on the biological characteristics of the genetic resources of the Stephania brachyandra in Thai Nguyen, one of Vietnam's valuable medicinal plants currently at risk of extinction. Investigation results indicate that Stephania brachyandra is commonly found at an average density of 32.57 plants per square kilometer, with distribution density varying across districts, being highest in Vo Nhai district and lowest in Phu Luong district.

Pyruvate decarboxylase (EC 4.1.1.1) was isolated and purified from the yeast Kluyveromyces lactis. The properties of this enzyme relating to the native oligomeric state, the subunit size, the nucleotide sequence of the coding gene(s), the catalytic activity, and protein fluorescence as well as circular dichroism are very similar to those of the well characterized pyruvate decarboxylase species from yeast.

Penaeidins are a family of antimicrobial peptides constitutively produced and stored in the haemocytes of penaeid shrimp. In response to microbial stimulation, they are released into the blood circulation and they further attach to shrimp cuticle surfaces through a chitin-binding property. An exo-1,3-b-glucanase has been isolated from cultural filtrate of Trichoderma viride AZ36. The N-terminal sequence of the purified enzyme (m ¼ 61 ^ 1 kDa) showed no significant homology to other known glucanases. The 1,3-b-glucanase displayed high activity against laminarins, curdlan, and 1,3-b-oligoglucosides, but acted slowly on 1,3-1,4-b-oligoglucosides. No significant activity was detected against high molecular mass 1,3-1,4-bglucans. The enzyme carried out hydrolysis with inversion of the anomeric configuration.

The siglecs (sialic acid-binding Ig-like lectins) are a distinct subset of the Ig superfamily with adhesion-molecule-like structure. We describe here a novel member of the siglec protein family that shares a similar structure including five Ig-like domains, a transmembrane domain, and a cytoplasmic tail containing two ITIM-signaling motifs. Siglec10 was identified through database mining of an asthmatic eosinophil EST library. Using the Stanford G3 radiation hybrid panel we were able to localize the genomic sequence of siglec-10 within the cluster of genes on chromosome 19q13.

The calcineurin (CaN) a and b catalytic subunit isoforms are coexpressed within almost all cell types. The enzymatic properties of CaN heterodimers comprised of the regulatory B subunit (CnB) with either the a or b catalytic subunit were compared using in vitro phosphatase assays. CaN containing the a isoform (CnAa) has lower Km and higher Vmax values than CaN containing the b isoform (CnAb) toward the PO4RII, PO4-DARPP-32(20–38) peptides, and p-nitrophenylphosphate (pNPP).
