Inocybe viscida sp. nov., a novel species found in a forest with old trees of Pinus brutia and tertiary relict endemic Liquidambar orientalis in coastal area of southwestern Turkey, is described and illustrated. We present this new species based on morphological and molecular data from nuclear rDNA internal transcribed spacer region (ITS1-5.8SITS2 = ITS) and the portions of nuc 28S rRNA (LSU) gene. Comprehensive description, field photographs, line drawings of the microscopic features and comparisons with phenetically similar taxa and phylogenetically related species are discussed.

Nesting water bird colonies may act as important drivers of aquatic-terrestrial nutrient turnover in coastal ecosystems. By depositing a large amount of guano, they induce changes in the structure of soils, flora, and fauna. However, little is known about how nesting water bird colonies influence soil fauna, especially in a Mediterranean type of coastal landscape.

In Quercus suber, cork oak, a Mediterranean forest tree of economic and social interest, rapid production of isogenic lines and clonal propagation of elite genotypes have been achieved by developing in vitro embryogenesis from microspores and zygotic embryos respectively.

Cork oak (Quercus suber L.) has a natural distribution across western Mediterranean regions and is a keystone forest tree species in these ecosystems. The fruiting phase is especially critical for its regeneration but the molecular mechanisms underlying the biochemical and physiological changes during cork oak acorn development are poorly understood.

The population dynamics of 2 species of Cistus L. (C. salviifolius L. and C. creticus L.) were studied along a post-fire successional gradient in Pinus brutia Ten. forests in Marmaris National Park, Turkey. The population density of Cistus spp. was 16 individual m-2 at the end of the first year after fire and then decreased exponentially (r2 = 0.926, P < 0.001) the second year after fire to later successional stages.

The eastern Mediterranean region is one of the main areas of the Mediterranean vegetation containing Calabrian cluster pine (Pinus brutia Ten., Pinaceae) forests and terebinth (Pistacia terebinthus L., Anacardiaceae) communities. This study was carried out with the leaves, shoots, leaf litters, and soils of Calabrian cluster pine and terebinth growing on both marl and conglomerate substrata in the eastern Mediterranean region (Turkey) to determine average C, N, P and K contents, and the amounts of humic and fulvic acid in these plant soils.

Quercus brantii is an important tree species in Zagros forests. Summer drought imposes severe limitations in Q. brantii forests, making reforestation with this species in general very difficult. This is further complicated by the limited ecophysiological information or this species.

Eucalyptus plantations are an important source of raw materials for the forest products industry in Turkey. Despite its economic and ecological value, there is little reference information regarding the growth and yield of eucalyptus plantations. Thus, a segmented compatible stem taper and merchantable tree volume equation system was developed for eucalyptus plantations in the Eastern Mediterranean Region of Turkey.

For additional data collection also international research networks and projects consortia were used. The used networks were the European Forest Institute Mediterranean regional office (EFIMED) and Project Centre INNFORCE, the COST Actions E30 and E51, and others. The included project consortia were the EU FP6 IP EFORWOOD, EU FP6 GoFOR, Erasmus Sokrates IP INNO-FOREST, and the FOPER project (network of research organisation in the Western Balkan region).

I can lay no claim to having discovered an America, but I do claim to have discovered a Columbus. His name is Benedetto Croce, and he dwells on the shores of the Mediterranean, at Naples, city of the antique Parthenope. Croce's America cannot be expressed in geographical terms. It is more important than any space of mountain and river, of forest and dale. It belongs to the kingdom of the spirit, and has many provinces.

Both direct emission from fires and ash resuspension from burnt soils could be an important source of airborne PM10. This pyrogenic material, which is composed of organic matter, black carbon and inorganic material, is to a large extent present in the size range below 10 µm and so can be resuspended by wind [17]. Although the contribution to ambient aerosol from fire smoke will generally be episodic, in areas where there is a constant forest burning, the particulate emission from this source could be significant.

Wildland fires are natural calamities that bring enormous environmental and economic damage worldwide and some of them cause human death. Achieving effective fire fighting is associated with the possibilities of predicting the characteristics of fire behaviour. Special attention needs to be drawn to meteorological conditions and their effect on fire spread in a bed of vegetation. On the other hand, studying the effect of forest fires on the environment is of equal significance for building the strategy and specific actions to be undertaken in the fire fighting process.
