This paper investigates the direct use values of melaleuca forests at U Minh Ha National Park. The market price method (MPM) was utilised to estimate the economic value. A semi-structured questionnaire comprising multiple-choice and open-ended questions was administered to 360 families in 2022 to collect data on the various forest products available locally, the quantity of these products collected, as well as their corresponding prices and costs.

Tra Su Melaleuca forest conservation area is one of typical flooded forests in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. Located at the upstream part of Mekong Delta, Tra Su Melaleuca forest is home to many species of animals and plants under the Special Use Forest Management System of Vietnam. The diversity and abundance of natural resources make Tra Su cajeput forests become an ideal destination for researchers and enthusiasts to discover the wild nature. Study and understanding on Melaleuca habitat could help conserve the Tra Su forest in sustainable way.

The Mekong Delta in the south of Vietnam is a highly dynamic landscape with rapid changes in land use. Costal forests of mangrove (Rhizophoraceae, Sonneratiaceae and Avicenniaceae) and the more inland Melaleuca forests are changed into shrimp ponds and rice fields.

The Mekong River Delta in Vietnam can be considered as a large tropical wetland, in which two typical eco-forest wetlands can be distinguished: the inland Melaleuca forest wetlands and the coastal mangrove forest wetlands. Their main functions are the provision of forest commodities, the regulation of the water balance and biodiversity conservation. However as elsewhere under human pressure their existence is under the threat of forest fires and deforestation. Their protection requires the implementation of a multi-level national or sub-national planning policy.
