A phytochemical study from fruits of Melia dubia Cav. collected in Quy Hop, Nghe An province led to the isolation of three secondary metabolites, including 21α-O-methylmelianodiol (1), 21β-O-methylmelianodiol (2) and (21S,23R,24R)- 21,23-epoxy-24-hydroxy-21β-methoxytirucalla-7,25-dien-3-one (3). The chemical structures of these compounds were determined based on 1D-, 2D- NMR, UV, IR, and MS analytical results and compared with reported data. All three compounds (1–3) were isolated from this plant for the first time.

M. dubia growth and yield performance was evaluated using Randomized Block Design with 10 treatments. There was significant variation in tree height (m), girth at breast height (GBH) (cm), and standing volume (m3 /tree or /ha) and biomass (kg/tree or t/ha), at SSG intercropping (July, 2019) and final SSG forage harvest (November, 2019), among the silvi-pasture (T1 to T5) and sole plantation (T6 to T10) systems.

Twenty Candidate Plus Trees (CPTs) of Melia dubia were selected from different places covering Valsad, Narmada and The Dangs districts of South Gujarat region of India. Selection was made through individual selection method by considering qualitative and quantitative traits of economic interest like stem straightness, roundness, tree height, and clear bole height, girth at breast height and disease resistance. The selected candidate plus trees will be useful in development of superior quality planting material for mass propagation and future tree improvement programmes.

Biochar, a stable form of carbon, is produced from pyrolysis of biological materials. It is attracting growing interest because of its potential to improve soil nutrients status, increase crop yield and sequester carbon (C) in the soil. The carbon in the biomass is subjected to easy degradation since they contain low grade carbon. But in biochar, pyrogenic carbon is formed by pyrolysis. Hence they remain in the soil for long periods. Biochar is produced from the pyrolysis of a variety of biological materials viz.

Malabar neem (Melia dubia), which is locally known as “Malaivembu”. The tree is found in forest plantations in India and is a fast growing tree crop with up to 20 m height. It produces greater bio-mass in relatively shorter period. The present study was carried out to evaluate commercially available fungicides and biofungicides in-vitro, for their efficacy against foliar and soil borne pathogens. Firstly five promising fungicides and four biocontrol agents were evaluated against fungal pathogens under laboratory conditions.

Field experiment was conducted during Kharif from 2010 to 2015 at GKVK, Bangalore to know the feasibility of cultivation of fingermillet in Melia dubia. There were six treatment combinations comprising intercrop of finger millet planted in different spacings with Melia dubia and finger millet alone as control. Results revealed that, sole finger millet recorded significantly higher grain (26.1 q ha-1 ) and straw yield (5865 kg ha-1 ), which was attributed to higher growth and yield attributes like number of productive tillers (6.17 hill-1 ) and 1000 seed weight (3.69 g).
