  • Nephrogenic ascites is described as a clinical condition of refractory ascites in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on renal replacement therapy. This entity was first described in 1970. Many nephrologists do not believe in nephrogenic ascites. The underlying etiologies can be multifactorial including a combination of poor nutrition, inadequate dialysis and ultrafiltration, increased peritoneal membrane permeability, and overall uremia.

  • Drought is among the most crucial limiting factors for crop production and is considered a major threat to food security. Rootstock selection is an important approach for drought management. This research was aimed to study the responses of important rootstocks against drought stress and to examine the impacts of melatonin application on the drought stress of these rootstocks. Carrizo citrange, fying dragon, and sour orange were selected for the current study.

  • Zeolite-polymer mixed matrix membranes were prepared by filling polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with clinoptilolite in various cationic forms of K, Mg, H, and Na. The membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy as well as measurements of O2, N2, and CO2 gas permeabilities. The results indicated the presence of an optimum zeolite loading in the mixed matrix membranes maximizing permeability.

  • This study introduces a new production method to use as a porous silicon-based proton exchange membrane for µDMFCs. In this respect, EIS, fuel crossover test, and fuel cell performance test at the µDMFC sample cell are performed at room temperature on a porous silicon-based membrane that was produced for passive mode µDMFC as a proton exchange membrane. The reason for performing the fuel crossover test is to ensure the silicon opened pores along the silicon wafer and to examine the fuel permeability of the membrane.

  • The blood–brain barrier (BBB) is a control mechanism that limits the diffusion of many substances to the central nervous system (CNS). In this study, we designed an in-vitro 3-dimensional BBB system to obtain a fast and reliable model to mimic drug delivery characteristics of the CNS. A support membrane of polycaprolactone nanofiber surfaces was prepared using electrospinning. After confirming the fiber morphology and size, endothelial cells (HUVEC) and glial cells were cultured on either side of this membrane.

  • Natural-product-based drugs commonly were converted to organic or inorganic salts due to better stability, solubility or membrane-permeability of new salts compared to the drug itself. In this report, succinate oxime ester of dipterocarpol was synthesized successfully in a simple column chromatography-free isolation process.

  • Resistance to carbapenems are because of various mechanisms like mutations in the outer membrane proteins like Opr D causing decreased permeability of the drugs, the carbapenem hydrolyzing enzymes–carbapenemases and the efflux mechanisms. Carbapenem resistance was studied in 140 non-repeat clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in a tertiary care hospital. Imipenem resistance was detected using Kirby Bauer’s standard disc diffusion method. MIC for Imipenem was detected in all resistant isolates using E-test strips.

  • The width of the air space was controlled by the change in the number of plastic mesh in the permeability chamber. The results showed that the quality of permeate solution was identical with the quality of normal distillate water and the desalination efficiency of AGMD module strongly depended on the feed temperature, air-gap. The optimum condition found was 60 °C of feed temperature and air-gap width of 5 mm, then the water recovery flux reached 2.5 L.m-2 .h-1 .
